DIY: Citrus Garland

Want to make the prettiest, most amazing smelling, vibrant colored citrus garland? Well you’re in luck, because we are going to show you a step by step how to! This process is super easy to do, but will take time and patience in the oven. The end result is so lovely and well worth the wait! Pick up some fresh citrus from your local store or farmers market, grab some twine, and lets get started!

What you will need:
-Citrus of choice
-Cookie sheet
-Twine
-A Sharp Knife
-Toothpick
-Eucalyptus (optional)

Step 1) Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Begin by cutting your citrus fruit into slices. You will want thin slices to ensure they dry out correctly, but thick enough to string your twine through without breaking the fruit.

puravida-4Step 2) Lay your slices flat onto a cookie sheet. Dab excess juice with a paper towel to help the drying process.

puravida-6puravida-8Step 3) Place in the oven for up to six hours, flipping your fruit every hour or so.

puravida-9Step 4) Remove from the oven when fruit is dry and all juice is evaporated. Let cool.

puravida-10Time to sting them all together!

puravida-12Step 5) Tie a knot to the end of a toothpick and connect your string to it. You will use this as a guide to go through your slices.

Jolly Popcorn Treat

Jolly Popcorn is the perfect treat to make around this time of year. A great combination of salty and sweet. Popcorn, candy, sweet chocolate, a treat you can enjoy anytime! We suggest making this treat with friends or family and eat it around the Christmas tree and watch your favorite holiday movie. Enjoy!

-Popcorn of choice
-Holiday colored candies
-Mini marshmallows
-White chocolate or marshmallow cream to dye
-Red food dye
-Melting chocolate

puravida-1Step 1) Melt your marshmallow cream or white chocolate with red food dye, and mix it all onto your popped pop corn.

puravida-3Step 2) Lay popcorn flat on a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Melt your chocolate and drizzle it all over your popcorn.

puravida-4Step 3) Add your holiday colored candies and mini marshmallows.

puravida-5Step 4) Let your melted chocolate set. Insert into serving bowls or glass jars. Can even be put in cellophane and given as gift.

Gift Inspo: Cookie Recipe in a jar

Give the perfect gift this year! Cookie ingredients already measured out in a jar! Whoever you give your cooke jar to, all they will have to add is butter and an egg, and they are ready to bake the most delicious Christmas cookies! Happy Holidays Pura Vida Fam!

What you will need:
-Quart size mason jar
-Flour (1 1/4 cup)
-Sugar (1/2 cup)
-Cocoa powder (1/4 cup)
-Salt (1 teaspoon)
-Baking Soda (1/2 Teaspoon)
-Mini Chocolate Chips (2/3 cups)
-Marshmallow + Crushed Peppermint + Red and White Chocolates to add (amount to your liking)

puravida-1Step 1) Measure and lay out all of the ingredients listed above to ensure nothing gets missed. You will layer all ingredients into your quart size mason jar.

puravida-2Step 2) Start with your flour. Add half , and use the other half for another layer.

puravida-3Step 3) Make sure its nice and flat. Shake back and fourth and tap on the counter to flatten. Add the salt and baking soda with the flour, since they are also white.

puravida-4Step 4) Layer in the other ingredients. Pack down the brown sugar with a spoon, or something flat.

puravida-5Step 5) Continue layering your ingredients. Save the candy toppings for the top.

img_6338Step 6) Decorate your jar. Add string, a piece of greenery, and some Pura Vida Bracelets! Use a gift tags to write out the remaining instructions.

“Now Add:
-1/2 Cup (One Stick) of Softened Butter
-1 Egg
Mix, roll into 1 inch balls and bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes”

Peppermint Mocha Coffee Scrub

Who doesn’t love a delicious peppermint mocha?! With this easy DIY, you can make it into a delightful body scrub! This smells amazing and leaves your skin feeling ridiculously smooth. This scrub is awesome to make for a gift this holiday season as well. Make one for yourself, and a few to give away! Just double, or triple the recipe below.

-Brown sugar (1/2 cup)
-Coffee grounds (1/2 cup)
-Coconut pil (1/4 cup)
-Cocoa powder (1 teaspoon)
-Olive oil (1 tablespoon)
-Any brand of peppermint essential oil (5-10 drops)

puravida-1Step 1) Add all of your ingredient to a bowl.

Honey Caramel Latte At Home

Try making this delicious Caramel Latte this fall season! Lets face it, spending $5 a few times a week at your local coffee shop for a delicious latte can get expensive! Try making a yummy one at home! We will teach your how to get the signature foam that makes a latte, without an expensive espresso machine. This latte variation includes the rich flavors of caramel and honey. Enjoy!

-French Press
-Ground Coffee of choice
-Milk (1 cup)
-Honey (1 tablespoon)
-Caramel sauce (1 tablespoon)
-A glass bottle with a lid

psalmsthirtyfour-sd-119Step 1) Take your lid off of your glass bottle. You will use this to go into the microwave to create your latte foam.

psalmsthirtyfour-sd-120Step 2) Pour 1 cup of milk into your glass jar.

psalmsthirtyfour-sd-121Step 3) Add 1 tablespoon of honey to your jar with the milk.

psalmsthirtyfour-sd-123Step 5) Shake up milk, honey, and caramel sauce in your glass jar for about 1 minute.

psalmsthirtyfour-sd-125Step 6) Place into the microwave for a minute. Jar will be hot, use a cloth to pull out, and shake vigorously for another minute.

Pallet Mug Holder

Do you have a mug collection just piled up in your cupboard? Why not let all those pretty little mugs you own be on display? We hope you will get to make delicious hot drinks this fall season in some of your favorite mugs. With all the options of hot drinks to enjoy: coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cider, lattes and more, displaying your mugs with this DIY Pallet Mug Holder makes it easier and can bring any room some fun. Follow along on how to make your own mug holder using a pallet! This takes some work but it is do-able for anyone who wants to create one.

-Wood Pallet
-Gloves
-Safety Glasses
-Hammer
-Short Pry bar
-Chop Saw
-Belt Sander or Hand Sander
-Measuring tape
-Pencil
-Wood Stain
-Paper towels
-Paint brush
-Nails
-Mug hooks
-Large picture hangers
-Acrylic paint (if you choose to write words on your finished product)

Step 1) First things first, you will need to take apart your pallet. Gather your safety glasses, short pry bar, hammer, and gloves.

img_0025Step 2) Slip on your gloves, put on your safety glasses, and take your short pry bar, and using your hammer begin to pull apart your pallet. Use your muscles for this one!

img_0029Step 3) Once the pallet is disassembled, and the nails are removed, You need to have 7 wood pieces in total. You will cut in half the longer piece with the fork lift prongs to make two. (second one from the left in this photo is the one that will be cut in half)

img_0036Step 4) Prepare your chop saw. Get a friend to help you if you have never used one before. If you do not have a chop saw at home, you can go to your local home improvement store and they can cut it for you.

img_0032Step 5) Take 4 of your wood pieces that measure to your desired length for them to be used as the boards that the hooks attach to. We measured and cut our boards about 24 inches in length to fit about 3-4 mugs across.

img_0038Step 6) Measure from top to bottom. Make the lines even.

img_0040Step 7) Put on your safety glasses, gloves, and carefully cut along your measure lines.

img_0045Step 8) Make sure your pieces measure up the same. This is a photo of the longer piece with the two fork lift prongs that you cut directly in half. This is the one you cut directly in half and will be used for the sides of your pallet display.

img_0046Step 9) Using a belt sander, or a hand sander, sand your pieces all around, and until all of the rough edges are smoothed out.

img_0054Step 10) Time to stain your wood pieces for a more finished look. Any wood stain color of choice will work.

img_0058Step 11) Using a paint brush, apply an even layer of stain to each wood piece. Make use your have gloves on and wear clothes your don’t mind getting ruined if the stain gets on it.

img_0062Step 12) Once you paint a layer of stain on, immediately wipe gently with a paper towel, depending how light you want your wood stain color to be. Remove any obvious drips. (helpful directions to proper staining techniques will be on the back of the can)

img_0064Step 13) Let your stain pieces dry.

img_0066Step 14) Gather all your hanging supplies. Nails (about 2-2 1/2 inch nails will work) make sure the nail is long enough to go through your wood board. Mug hooks, and large picture hangers.

img_5183Step 15) Nail a back board to your two even side pieces. This is where you will nail your picture hangers and then attach to the wall.

img_5186Step 16) Flip over to the front side and nail all of your front boards making even space between them.

img_5190Step 19) Place mug hooks where you want them. Once you like the placement of them, secure them in.

img_5197Step 20) Make sure everything is nailed in tight, and your hooks aren’t loose.

img_5203Step 21) Nail your photo hooks to the back board of your display. Make sure you purchase hooks that can hold over 20 pounds.

img_5227Step 22) You can choose to paint words on your coffee pallet. Hang in your home wherever you want to display! Hang coffee mugs on your hooks and enjoy your hard work!

Easiest Cat Ears DIY

This is probably the easiest cat ears DIY you will find this Halloween season. They are super simple to make, and you can dress them up anyway you want with either a simple black dress, black pants and a comfy black tee, some cool cat make-up…..and do not forget our brand new cat charm!!

What you will need:
-Black felt (we chose black with sparkles in it) + Pink felt
-Black headband
-Scissors
-Hot glue gun
Cat ear cutouts

img_0034Step 1) Use your “Cat ear cutout” templet provided in the “What you will need” section. Cut out four black felt cat ear pieces. (The bigger cut out shape). Do the same on the pink felt with the smaller cut out (you will need only two pink pieces). This will be used for the inside of your cat ears.

img_0036Step 2) Lay out all of your pieces to prepare to glue them together. (four black, two pink)

img_0039Step 3) Add hot glue to the top portion of your black pieces.

img_0046Step 4) Glue the other black felt piece to the other. Leaving the bottom open.

img_0049Step 5) Put hot glue on the back of pink felt piece.

img_0053Step 6) Press pink smaller piece onto your black felt piece.

img_0055Step 7) Do the same to the other side. Press down to secure it.

img_0058Step 8) Place the felt pieces on the headband where you want them before you glue them down.

img_0065Step 9) Add hot glue to the bottom of the black piece, wrap it around your headband and press down to secure it.

img_0069Step 10)  Hold down for a few seconds to make sure it is secure.

How to pack the perfect “Carry on” bag

Hey PV fans! Today on the blog we bring you some travel tips on how to pack the best “carry on” bag! If you have any fall/holiday travel plans, be sure to save this blog and read it again when you are getting ready to pack. All of these things are great to have on your next plane ride. All of them can fit perfectly in a tote bag or backpack. Safe Travels!

img_7358Be sure you pack a light jacket for travel. It can get chilly on plane rides so having one packed with you on a carry on is a smart move.

img_7363Reading material and a journal is a must! By packing these items it can help time pass by. Reading is great to keep our brains sharp. And doing it for something other than school/ work can be a great practice. Having a journal you can write down any thoughts that may come to mind, you can practice some drawing, or even document your travels.

img_7367Reading glasses (if you use them), hand sanitizer, and chapstick. Some great essentials to have.

img_7371DO NOT forget a water bottle! This helps you stay hydrated during flights that can be very dry and leave you feeling dehydrated. Just make sure it is empty when going through security, and you can fill it up past security. A lot of airport have filtered water stations where you can fill up.

img_7372Headphones and writing material. Our new Wanderer Pouch makes a perfect holder for any of your carry on supplies. Don’t forget headphones!  Listing to music, or using them to watch a movie is a huge help to pass time on long flights.

img_7377Don’t forget snacks and gum! Usually flights provide you with a small snack of either peanuts or pretzels. Some flights don’t offer any food, and some you will need to pay for a good snack. Pack your own to eat whenever you please throughout your flight, and without paying a high price. Gum is also very helpful to have to help with altitude changes and prevents your ear from being plugging during take off.

Be a Pineapple: Halloween Costume DIY

Who wouldn’t want to be one of our favorite fruits for Halloween?! Bright, Sweet, and lives in tropical places. Be a Pineapple with this easy costume DIY.

img_5361What you will need:
-Yellow shirt
-Green headband
-Empty toilet paper roll
-Black puffy paint
-Green card stalk paper
-Scissors
-Hot glue gun
-Marker

img_5249Step 1) Draw a long leaf like shape to use as a stencil. About 4 inches long. On your sturdy green construction paper, make several leaf shapes to use for your pineapple crown.

img_5251Step 2) Cut out all our your leaf shapes.

img_5254Step 3) Use your hot glue gun and begin gluing leaf pieces onto your toilet paper roll. Layering pieces, making some smaller towards the bottom, and tall ones toward the top. You can even slightly bend the top pieces to make it look more realistic to a pineapple crown.

img_5257Step 4) Put hot glue on the bottom of your toilet paper roll piece, and attach it to your green headband. Your pineapple crown is now complete!

img_5258Step 5) Lets start decorating the yellow shirt we will use for the pineapple body. Lay your shirt on a flat surface.

img_5262Step 6) Using your puffy paint, draw an upside down “V” to create the pines that you see on pineapples.

img_5268And that’s it! That is all you need to create a pineapple costume! Don’t forget to pair with our pineapple 3D bitty bracelets!
