Meet Our Customer Service Team

May 24, 2016 — by Griffin Thall

Hey Pura Vida fans! Have you ever visited our website and chatted with one of our customer service reps? If so, you already know just how awesome + helpful they are! Our customer service team puts in long hours to make sure YOU are happy with your order. When you’re happy, they are happy too! This week we want to highlight the team… 🙂

“I grew up in a little beach town in northern Massachusetts and naturally went very far away for school – Boston. After going to school in Boston, I decided to drive cross-country last winter and move out to San Diego. Even though I miss home occasionally, the weather out here reminds me why I stay. I still run my dogs instagram though and he lives back home. Feel free to hit him with a follow @mrmiloman. He’s a real cutie!

I’m happiest at the beach or eating chocolate covered pretzels and watching Game of Thrones. I love hanging out with friends and snapchatting everything. I’m super laid back and am always down for a cool adventure. Anything from hikes to concerts and of course a good margarita – I’m in! I’m so excited to be out here working for such a great company and can’t wait to see where life takes me on the best coast!”

“I was born in Switzerland and moved to San Diego when I was 4 years old. Growing up in San Diego is the best thing ever for a kid – it made me fall in love with the outdoors, especially the ocean. I picked up my first surfboard at 8 years old and have been addicted to the surf lifestyle ever since. This affected my career path as well. I never want to work at a place where I have to wear a suit and tie and be clean-shaven everyday. That is why I love working for Pura Vida! I come into work everyday either salty from surfing in the morning or sweaty from biking to work!

While I am not at work you can catch me around the La Jolla reefs surfing or in the shaping bay making new boards. I also love going on weekend trips to Rosarito with all of my buddies to score at uncrowded breaks and to binge eat tacos and cervesas.

My favorite bracelet is the Black Braided. I wear it everyday! When I feel like wearing two, I put on the Solid Granite or the Surfaid Original bracelet!”

“I spent my childhood growing up in a small town in North Carolina, the kind of place where you find your independence at a young age, climbing fences between houses and exploring barefoot through the muddy creeks that run through the neighborhood. Every fence I climbed led me to some new place that felt uncharted and untouched to me, even if it was only a few houses down from my own. Every tiny creek I explored was an ocean of little fish and frogs to discover and make mine.

When I was older I moved to San Diego—trading in running through muddy creeks for days on the sandy beaches and exploring the wild coasts of Southern California, but I kept that independence, the need for exploration and freedom I’d found when I was a kid in North Carolina.

On the weekends here I find myself seeking those fences to climb over and those creeks to explore, but now those creeks and fences look different.

It looks more like staying up into the early hours of morning listening to wild stories from strangers that eventually turn into amazing friends, or hiking down the cliffs to the get to that perfect place on the beach you have to know about to find.

That’s why I love working at Pura Vida, because of the lifestyle we promote and encourage. A wild life, that’s full and pure no matter where you are in it. I try to mix things up on my wrist using different textures of the seed beads with a bolder braided bracelet and a little glimmer of a gold bitty to keep things exciting.

I can’t wait to hear about what your Pura Vida collection looks like, and help you find the best stack to represent yourself on your wrist. Chat me!”

We love our customer service team!

May 12, 2016 — by Griffin Thall

Hey Pura Vida fans! We recently made a trip back to Costa Rica, where we got to visit our team and see firsthand how much it has grown and expanded out there. We are in awe of the talent and creativity from the bracelet artists that are part of our team. It’s crazy to think just five years ago we met Jorge and Joaquin on a street corner in Costa Rica, and now they are in charge of creating all the bracelets you see today. Currently, Jorge, Joaquin, and 100+ of their amigos hold full-time jobs thanks to Pura Vida Bracelets. Take a look at the photos below. You will see how some of the bracelets are created, and the beautiful faces that make up our Costa Rican team! Pura Vida!

BEST GoPro Accessories

February 3, 2016 — by Griffin Thall

Congratulations! You’ve done it!! After hours of researching which one to buy, innumerable text messages back and forth with your filmmaker friends, and a dozen trips to Best Buy and back…you’ve finally bought yourself a beautiful piece of plastic that fits inside the palm of your hand…you’re officially a proud GoPro owner.

Now it’s time to do something awesome, right?! Jump out of a plane in a wing suit. Dive in the ocean to swim with sharks. Take a climb to the top of Mount Everest?! Or perhaps you just want to simply attach the GoPro to your head and film A Day In My Life video (see my own) showing all that goes on in your not-so-average day.

You’re now wielding the power of a GoPro, and your life is about to get a lot more adventurous! The places to put this tiny little camera are endless, and ways to mount it are infinite. But there is one slight problem….you don’t have any mounts yet. You soon find out that a quick online search for GoPro accessories/mounts can be even more daunting than buying the action camera itself!

With endless mounting possibilities, you feel a bit overwhelmed. This is where I come in.

Hi There! My name’s Jesse!  I’m a photographer, filmmaker, and avid GoPro enthusiast. I’m also part of the GoPro and Pura Vida family. I own just about every GoPro mount and accessory out there! I’m quite familiar with the good, better, and best GoPro items on the market. Today, I’m thrilled to share some of my favorite GoPro accessories!

(MSRP $50)2D2A0956
Hands down, my favorite GoPro mount out there! I use this for everything. You can clamp it on anything from the front of your car to the end of a pencil. It has great strength for holding onto anything it’s clamped to, and you can also remove the gooseneck from the clamp and use it as a small selfie stick. The possibilities with this mount are endless.

(MSRP $20)

A must-have for anyone who plans on bringing their GoPro in deep water. I can’t tell you how many GoPros I’ve lost (and FOUND <– video HERE ) because I’ve chosen not to install the floaty onto the back of my camera. Trust me, you need this one.

(MSRP $20)

This is probably the most popular accessory sold. Everyone buys one of these. It’s a classic, and highly recommended. However, once I bought my Mouth Mount (see lower below) I rarely used the head strap. That being said, it’s still nice to run around with it on your head while getting cool point of view angles.

(MSRP $60)

unnamed2 unnamed3

This mount does exactly what the title says, mounts anywhere on your legs and arms. Perfect for diving, surfing, skiing, skydiving… you know, all the things we all secretly wish we could actually do.

(MSRP $50)

This one isn’t a must-have, I just added it to the list because it’s super rad! It does what it says, completely blacks out your GoPro, making it look even cooler than it already does.

So those are my top 5 favorite GoPro accessories/mounts. All the items above are made by GoPro and you can purchase them on GoPros Website.  If you want to see some of the mounts in action, check out this film I made during summer, featuring just about every GoPro mount I could get my hands on.

I can’t end this blog without mentioning a few of my favorite third-party mounts as well. These also happen to be some of my most used accessories:

(MSRP $55)

By far my most used mount. This is usually the number one thing I mount my GoPro onto no matter what adventure I embark upon. Be warned, the Reach pole doesn’t float, so you might want to have a Floaty attached to your camera if you decide to go swimming!

(MSRP $30)

I really love this mount. It was originally made for surfers. They put it in their mouth and stay hands free while riding waves, however, I use it for everyday life. In fact, during 2015 I took it with me everywhere and filmed one second of my day for a whole year! Check it out here.

(MSRP $300)

This is the stuff for professionals. This will separate you from all the amateurs. The price on this may be a little up there, but it’s worth every penny. Once you take it out into the ocean and start shooting the over/under shots, you’ll be obsessed with it! Trust me. It’s amazing.

And that wraps it up!! This should give you a little push in the right direction on which mounts to purchase! Before you know it, you’ll be gaining more followers and likes on instagram as people view your rad shots! And when all the comments roll in (because they always do) of people asking what camera and mount you used…simply lead them over to this blog post!

Now get out there, start shooting, and don’t forget to tag Pura Vida in all your cool GoPro shots!!

California Dreamin’

January 26, 2016 — by Griffin Thall

The California coast is truly a special place. Whether you live here or not, we believe everyone should take a trip up the famous 1 HWY.

Below are some photos of our friends reppin’ Pura Vida the whole trip! Michael (@michaelswitzza) and her friend Alex decided to start in LA and go all the way up to San Francisco. Below are some of her highlighted photos from his drive the 1 Highway. Within their first couple hours of being in California, They got to witness one of the most breathtaking sunsets of their lives at El Matador Beach in Malibu.

After the beauty Malibu has to offer, they began to drive through Ventura, San Simeon, through the windy twisty cliffs of Big Sur, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco. It was an epic 10 day journey to say the least. Michael said she saw some of the most beautiful scenery she has ever laid eyes on!

Salt Wander Lust

January 19, 2016 — by Griffin Thall

One of our Pura Vida Babes Eryn Krouse (@eryakrous) took flight to go explore the Island of Oahu! She met with photographer Aaron Nakamura (@aaron_nakamura)  at one of Oahu’s sought out beaches, Waimanalo. It it a beautiful beach known for its three miles of soft white sand, ironwood trees, and beautiful turquoise waters. It was rainy when Eryn and the photographer met up at the beach to shoot. Luckily, Aaron (photographer) had an underwater housing unit for his camera, so they decided to go out for a salty water swim. Despite the unusually cold temperature that day in Hawaii, Eryn didn’t mind getting right in, because the ocean is one of her favorites places to be at. We love seeing where our PV reps get to travel to, and take us along for the adventure!
If you ever get a chance to visit Oahu, Check out this beach! We promise you will not regret it! Thank you Eryn for sharing a glimpse of your time on the island with us!

5 Tips and Tricks on Taking the Best Polaroids

January 11, 2016 — by Griffin Thall

Polaroids are back in style. They were a must have on everyones Christmas list, and if you already have one…you probably hoped good ol’ Santa Claus would put some film in your stocking 😉

Here at Pura Vida, we love capturing moments. Polaroids are perfect to capture a moment in a creative way, then you can instantly enjoy it in your hands right after the picture was taken. There are also some pretty cool ways to display your new film too.
Check out another one of our blog posts on ‘How to create a wired wall hanger’ to display photos: (just replace prints with your polaroid prints)

Best Tips and Tricks we have found to be helpful:

1) Don’t “Shake it like a Polaroid picture”

The Phrase “Shake it like a Polaroid Picture” should only be applied to dancing, not actually shaking the film once it comes out. You should never wave your film to get it to dry quicker. Newer instax mini cameras, film takes about 5 minutes to dry and process.

2) Practice Makes Perfect:

Practice. Practice. Practice. Expect to have a few duds in your mix, but its all apart of learning your camera, and what works best for you. If this camera is new to you, it will take some getting used to. Film isn’t cheap, but worth it to maybe waste a few, just for the sake of practice.

3) Take your time setting up your shot.

Often, people naturally rush, and if your subjects are people, take your time making sure their hair is just right, eyes stay open, count them down and give them a warning. You have one shot, taking your time is key to setting up your perfect shot.

4) Good lighting

If you are shooting with the mini instax camera, you might not have as much control since shutter speed and flash is automatic. Shooting outdoors with good lighting conditions will help improve the quality of your shot.

Getting cool shots and taking your camera out to explore with friends, creating moments, is the best part! The best part of shooting is enjoying the process, the outcome, and creating new memories!
