Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

January 21, 2019 — by Kayla Holmes

MLK-Day-Human-Rights-Campaign-Event-39-960x640.jpg

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Pura Vida Team came together to participate in a Day of Service hosted by the Human Rights Campaign San Diego. Inspired by MLK’s words and a shared commitment to our community and equality, we helped assemble 700 (!!!) backpacks of toiletries, snacks, and other essentials for San Diego’s homeless youth, of which more than 20% are LGBTQ.

Our team, along with over 100 other volunteers, created an assembly line to put together the backpacks! Items included shampoo, conditioner, combs, granola bars, and so many more essentials we use every day.

It was such an amazing opportunity to join the San Diego community and do something good in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. None of this would have been possible without our amazing Charity Coordinator, Kristy!

We highly encourage you to grab your friends, family, or coworkers, and get out to do something good in your community to celebrate as well!

If you want to learn more about the Human Rights Campaign, you can read about them here and be sure to check out any upcoming events they’re hosting in your community.

“The time is always right to do what is right.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.

3 Simple Ways to Protect Our Oceans and Marine Life

December 18, 2018 — by Kristy Ryan

Liotta_SCENICS_05-960x719.jpg

Not-so-fun fact: Every minute, one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans. As if that’s not scary enough, it turns out this might have an even bigger impact on our precious marine life than we knew.

One recent study found microplastics—tiny pieces of plastic debris that come from any number of sources—in the gut of every single sea turtle examined (including more than 100 turtles from seven different species). To be exact, more than 800 plastic particles were found in these sea turtles, including everything from rubber bands, balloons and tires to cigarettes and pieces of clothing. The sea turtles often mistake these bits of pollution for food, and in some cases simply aren’t able to avoid all the debris surrounding them.

Young sea turtles are especially likely to mistake to the plastics for food, but sea turtles of all age and species are at risk, including the Pura Vida turtle, Vida, below. So sad!

Unfortunately, sea turtles aren’t the only ones being harmed by the ever-increasing amount of plastic that’s entering our oceans on a daily basis. Earlier this year, a short-fin male pilot whale died in Thailand after eating more than 17 pounds of plastic bags and packaging. And every year, millions of seabirds suffer the same fate from consuming plastic waste.

This is why it’s crucial for all of us to act right now to help protect our oceans and the marine life living within them. If we don’t, the amount of plastic in the ocean will likely increase tenfold by 2020. And by 2050, that means there would be more plastic than fish in our oceans.

But enough with the bad news; here’s the good news: We can all make a difference! Big changes start with tiny steps, including three moves you can make right now to reduce your impact and protect our marine life:

1. Reduce your plastic usage and waste.

  • Use a reusable cup, mug, or bottle whenever possible.
  • Avoid products with plastic microbeads.
  • BYOS – Bring your own straw!
  • Use Beeswax wraps instead of cling wrap.

Click here to read more strategies to reduce plastic waste!

2. Attend a beach cleanup

Grab some friends or coworkers and organize your own cleanup, or work with a local organization to find a scheduled cleanup at a beach near you! Click here to read more about our recent beach cleanup in San Diego.

3. Support our partners!

We’ll donate 10% of net sales back to our awesome partners that are helping to keep our beaches and marine life plastic free.

Save the Sea Turtles Bracelet

It is the mission of Sea Turtle Conservancy to ensure the survival of sea turtles within the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific through research, education, training, advocacy and protection of the natural habitats upon which they depend. 10% of net profits of this bracelet will be donated to Sea Turtle Conservancy.

December 3, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

GiveBack-Feature.jpg

To give is to receive! Make this season extra special by giving more kindness, love and your time in addition to all the wonderful presents. Here are 14 Ways to Give Back During the Holidays to get you inspired:

Kindness-Feature

1) Ask everyone to donate to your favorite charity instead of buying you a present this holiday season.
2) Organize a toy drive at your school.
3) Grab a group of your friends and volunteer at the local food bank.
4) Remind people on your social media to also give back during the holidays. Every bit counts no matter the size or the contribution.
5) If you live in a snowy state, shovel your neighbours’ driveways after a big snowfall. BONUS, it’s a great workout!
6) If you live in a sunny state, mow your neighbours’ lawns as a surprise for when they get home from work.
7) Bake chocolate chip cookies and bring some hot chocolate to your local fire or police station.
8) Get creative and draw up a coupon book to give to your parents/siblings/roomies etc. for house chores you wouldn’t normally do.
9) Gather up your old coats and donate them to Goodwill or a homeless shelter.
10) In the Starbucks line, pay for the person’s coffee behind you.
11) Write a kind, cheerful note and leave it on someone’s windshield.
12) Bring some blankets, pet food or toys to the animal shelter.
13) Have a holiday bake sale and donate the profits to your local homeless shelter.
14) Shop our Charity Collection and cross some lucky people off of your gift list. Each bracelet donates to a different cause so you can give gifts AND give back at the same time!

We love seeing and supporting other companies who are doing great things and giving back. Just like our bracelets, every tentree item you purchase makes a difference. The company is “rooted” in providing sustainable clothing made from organic, recycled materials by socially and environmentally responsible factories.

With each purchase, 10 trees are planted whose life and environmental impact will live on way longer than any piece of clothing. The trees live for 20-30 years, but also provide seedlings which in turn grow into more trees. It’s a domino effect we can really get into!

Hey PV fans! Today we are featuring one of our brand new charity bracelets in partnership with Made In A Free World, a “network of individuals, groups and business working together to disrupt slavery and make freedom go viral.”  The organization works through projects and campaigns on the ground in locations such as Ghana and India to remove slavery from the system of human consumption.

Modern-day slavery affects over 29 million people and is worse now than it has ever been in human history.  Unless we can put a stop to it.  That is what Made In a Free World is all about.

Watch this powerful video about Made In A Free World’s efforts in India to put a stop to child labor and slavery in the cosmetic industry.  MIAFW is working to create Safe Villages for the children of India – villages where children go to school during the day rather than doing back-breaking labor in mines.

Tell us how excited you are about this and other charities that we support in the comments!  And check out more info on Made In A Free World by visiting their website!

Unlock Hope

$1 of this bracelet is donated to Unlock Hope.

In Uganda, young girls aren’t given the same chances as boys.
Without access to education girls are often forced to marry young, bear many children that they are unable to care for and are coerced into working difficult jobs for very little pay. To a young refugee girl in Uganda, hope is an education. We believe educating these girls is the first step in ending a seemingly never ending cycle of poverty in Africa.
Help us Unlock Hope in their lives for a better future.
We have partnered with Think Humanity, an organization that runs a hostel in Hoima, Uganda for young refugee girls from all across Africa, many of whom are orphaned. Every purchase at Unlock Hope gives these girls quality healthcare, healthy food to eat and a safe place to live, which enables and supports them in their pursuit of an education.

Charity Spotlight: Carly’s Club for Pediatric Cancer and Laughing At My Nightmare

If you are a fan of our Charity Collection, then you would LOVE two of our newest additions: Carly’s Club for Pediatric Cancer and Laughing At My Nightmare!
Want to add a little bit of sunshine to your wrist? Check out Carly’s Club for Pediatric Cancer!
Carly’s Club exists to offer hope for a cure by funding critical pediatric cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute as well as an extra “dose” of happiness to children and teens diagnosed with cancer and their families through year-round support programs to help meet their emotional and social needs.
Carly’s Club was founded by 8-year-old Carly Collard Cottone in 1999 after she was diagnosed with medulloblastoma – an aggressive form of brain cancer – as a way to help other kids who were battling cancer.  Even after losing both of her biological parents to cancer and then facing her own cancer battle, Carly faced her struggle against the disease with amazing courage and optimism.  Sadly, she lost her hard-fought battle in August of 2002. Little did she know the positive impact that Carly’s Club would have on the lives of the thousands of children diagnosed with cancer each year.
The yellow color in the bracelet represents pediatric cancer awareness.”

What does Pura Vida Mean?

September 22, 2014 — by Griffin Thall

251880_10151916290600082_169476471_n1-633x391.jpg
A phrase that you will hear and see everywhere in Costa Rica is “Pura Vida”. The term “Pura Vida” has been present in Costa Rica’s vocabulary for over 50 years. It’s English translation means “pure life”  or “simple life”, however its more then just a phrase- it is a way of life.
Where did this phrase originally come from? People believe that the term “Pura Vida” came around in 1956 after a Mexican movie entitled “Pura Vida!” was released. In the movie, the main character uses the phrase throughout the movie to stay optimistic, happy, and full of life, despite all the negative circumstances around him. Thanks to this movie, the phrase “Pura Vida” is the unofficial motto to one of the happiest countries on Earth.
Pura Vida is so much more then just a phrase, it is their culture and way of life. Costa Ricans (Ticos) use this term to say hello, goodbye, or even to let people know everything’s good! Costa Ricans don’t just let the term bring them a good life, it’s the way they use it in their everyday attitude to make them happy. “Pura Vida” means that people need to be grateful for the things they do have in life, instead of dwelling on the negative things that they don’t. The phrase shows that no matter how bad you may think you have it, life for someone else can be far more less fortunate then your own. Life is too short to be worried and upset, everyone needed to make the most of life! All in all, the locals strive to live a stress free, laid-back life and they believe that their motto “Pura Vida” perfectly exemplifies how the locals live. Costa Ricans feel that if more “foreigners” grasped this concept, the world would be a lot happier.
“Pura Vida” is the back bone to this company. We believe in a pure and happy life, and that our company and products can bring that to many people around the world. Our products can make a big impact in customers lives, whether its helping their favorite charity, or creating their own bracelet and being a voice behind our brand. Pura Vida can help you find your pure life. ¡Pura Vida!
