Learn How to Paddle like a Surf Pro

July 17, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

When in doubt, paddle out! We spent some time out of the water with Barefoot Surf Travel‘s expert surf guide, Franco Rivas (@pepes_world), so he could give us some tips on how to improve our paddling and become a better surfer. Check it out!

1) Lay down on your board and make sure your body is centered. The nose of your board shouldn’t be too far out of the water or below the water either. Being in the right position on your board is important for paddling faster and more efficiently.

2) Keep your chest and head up while looking out towards the waves. You always want to be aware of what’s going on around you and keep an eye out for other surfers.

3) Cup your hands like a spoon while you’re paddling, so you can really move through the water.

4) Starting from the nose of your board, pull one arm back towards your legs in a smooth, fluid motion through the water using your arm, shoulder and back muscles. Your arms should stay as close to the board as you possible to get the full range of motion and most power. Alternate this movement between each arm.

5 Morning Surf Stretches

July 15, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

There’s nothing better than pairing your morning coffee with some morning waves. Before you head into the water, take a few minutes to stretch it out and prepare your body to hang 10 with these 5 morning surf stretches! Hold each stretch for 5-10 seconds and do as many rounds as you like.

1) Upward Dog

Get into a plank position with your hands in line with your shoulders and core tight. Lower your knees to the ground then your chest, while keeping your elbows tucked into your sides. Slowly lift your chest upwards. Don’t forget to spread your fingers wide and smile!

2) Criss Cross

Sit with your legs straight in front of you. Cross your right leg over the left then touch your left elbow to the outside of your right knee. Remember to use your right arm to push into a position where your back is straight. Breathe into the twist and feel your core start to warm up! Switch legs.

3) Shoulder Stretch

Stand tall and bring your right arm behind your head. Grab your right elbow with your left hand and slightly pull towards your head while your right arm pushes downward towards the floor. Switch. Feels good right?

4) Heart Opener

You’re going to be doing a lot of paddling, so it’s important to stretch out your chest prior to. Interlock both hands behind your head then slowly push your chest out and shoulders back. Take a few deep breathes in this pose and feel awesome!

5) Touch Your Toes

Stand with your legs wide and bend forward while keeping your back and legs as straight as possible. Touch your right arm to the outside of your left foot. If you’re more advanced, you can raise your left arm to the sky in line with your right arm to really open your chest and stretch out your core (pretend there’s a long stick behind your head going from your right hand to your left).

Time to surf!

5 Best Yoga Poses in the Morning

February 16, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Inhale happiness and exhale greatness. Wake up on the bright side every morning with these 5 yoga poses meant to clear your mind, open your heart and set yourself up for a wonderful day.

1) Forward Fold
You’re most likely going to be sitting for the majority of the day so stretch it out now. Slowly bend forward as you exhale towards the ground. Bend your knees if that helps you reach lower. Don’t strain yourself or do anything that feels uncomfortable. This should feel relaxing and natural. Take 5-10 deep breathes. Gradually start to come back to standing by curling up, one vertebrate at a time.

2) Downward Dog
Lengthen and loosen all those important muscles that work to keep your body upright all day. Lay down on your stomach, tuck you toes under and plant each hand directly under your shoulders. Push off your hands and lift your tailbone towards the ceiling. Breathe is very important here. With each exhale, sit deeper into the stretch and relax everything from your head to your toes.

3) Tree Pose
This pose is my favourite because you get to really open up your chest and feel like Rocky Balboa. Stand with feet hip width apart and shift your weight onto one foot. Bring the other foot to the inside of your leg and rest it anywhere from your ankle to your inner thigh (depending on your flexibility). Don’t forget to keep your hips facing forward. If you’re feeling really awesome, reach both arms to the sky in a “Y” shape. Stand tall and feel rooted into the ground, just like a tree.

4) Seated Twist
This position stretches your upper body and awakens your tummy to get it ready for a healthy, nourishing breakfast. In a seated position, cross one leg over the other over with a bent knees. Straighten your back. Then take the arm opposite of your crossed leg and touch the inside of your elbow to the outside of your knee. Really breathe into this stretch as you begin to twist further and deeper into the stretch.

5) Hands to Heart Center
Probably the most important and effective pose of this series, this is the best time to set your intentions for the day. In a seated position with your legs crossed, sit up straight and bring both hands into prayer position right in front of your heart. Close your eyes and really focus on the inhale and exhale of your breathe as you tell yourself how great your day is going to be. Don’t forget to smile! Sit in this position for as long as you need.
