8 Tips For Self Care

With the holidays long behind us, getting out of that vacay mode and back into a school/work routine can add to some unwanted stress and anxiety. So we encourage you to focus a little more on you (and treat yourself!) because sometimes you just need to be selfish and indulge in some self care. Read on to discover some of our favorite self care tips to help you unwind, relax, and let go of any stress.

 

1. Get Moving!

With that new gym membership you just got for the New Year, reap some benefits other than getting that summer bod! Exercising makes you happy through the release of endorphins, while reducing the likelihood of depression. If the gym isn’t for you, we suggest getting outside and paddle boarding, going on a walk, or going for a scenic bike ride. And for those days when exercising is definitely not happening, have a mini dance party in your room! Invite your friends over, blast your favorite songs, and dance the day away!

 

2. Indulge in Some Scent Therapy

Nothing beats coming home after an exhausting day, lighting a candle, and lying down. Really, is there anything better? Okay, maybe indulging in some ice cream, but scent therapy can have some amazing benefits! Lavender is known for calming the body, reducing stress, and easing that pesky anxiety. You can never go wrong with a stress reducing candle, but we always love a good DIY to mix with our store bought candles! If you’re feeling up for it, try out our lavender and rosemary air-freshener DIY to keep your room smelling fresh and help put your mind at ease.

 

3. Technology Detox

Consider destressing with a little technology detox every day. Now we don’t mean to throw out your phone and give it up completely, but try setting aside 30 minutes right when you wake up, after work, or before bed to enjoy life screen free. You’ll likely find yourself releasing some anxiety; you may even become more productive or find yourself connecting more with others.

 

4. Talk About It!

Sometimes the best way to let out all those anxious feelings is simply by opening up and sharing what’s on your mind. Whether you talk with a good friend, a family member, or join an online support group (like the one on the ADAA’s website), it’s so important to vent about your feelings and release all the stress you’ve been piling up. Don’t think your problems don’t matter. You are important and deserve to be heard, so scream it from the rooftops if you need to! Trust us, you’ll feel a lot better.

 

5. Create an at home Spa Day

When it comes to self care, don’t forget to treat yourself! Because let’s be real, it’s been a long week, you need to destress, and the spa sounds like the perfect solution. The only issue is that spas can be expensive, so here’s our solution: invite your girls over and bring the spa to you! Try out some fun DIYs, like our DIY pore strips or DIY sugar scrub (it smells incredible, you’ll want to use it every day). Make sure to set the mood and create a calming environment with your favorite scent, some relaxing spa music, and let your mind unwind and destress with your new spa DIYs.

 

6. Meditate

One of the simplest things you can do to help yourself reduce stress and anxiety is meditation! We understand how crazy life can get, between balancing work, a social life, and exercising (seriously, there’s not enough hours in the day), but we promise you’ll benefit from taking 10 minutes out of your day just to sit and meditate. We suggest using Headspace, an app built for meditation anytime and anywhere – so feel free to destress in the morning, during work, or even before bed.

 

7. Write it Down

Remember being little and writing down every little thing that happened in your diary? Writing and journaling can be a great way to destress and unwind from an anxiety filled day and allow your mind to ease. Whether serious writing or doodling is your forte, letting your mind wander and getting creative can be a great way to let go of built up stress! Even something as simple as writing down a list of to-dos or writing down things that didn’t completely go wrong during your hectic day can help. Draw, doodle, write a novel. Whatever way your mind sways creatively will be perfect for throwing that anxiety away.

 

8. Try Something New

We get so sucked into routines – wake up, go to work, work out, go to bed – sound familiar? Don’t forget to try something new! There’s something enticing about finding a new hobby, reading a brand new book, or discovering a new trail. Finding something that can break up your normal routine can be a new outlet to relieve your stress from the day and be a great coping mechanism from anxiety. You may meet new people or discover a new skill, so go try something new that will allow you to relax and unwind – you never know what may come from it!

Holiday Gift Boxes

With the holidays coming in quick we are in DIY heaven! What’s better than personalized gifts? Make every present special this holiday season by putting your own personal spin to it. All my favorite gifts have been handmade. These gift boxes are also the perfect thing to gift Puravida Bracelets in. Make them for birthdays, holidays or any other special occasion. Let’s get started!

What you will need:

  1. Craft paper
  2. String
  3. Tape, scissors
  4. Tags and any other accessories you want to use to decorate
  5. Stensil provided

Begin by tracing the stencil onto your craft paper.

Use scissors to cut out the correct shape of the stencil.

The dotted lines in the stencil will guide you on where to fold your cutout. Once you have folded it into a box, use tape to secure the edges.

Use yarn or string to wrap around the box. Along with other decorations to add to the top!

Have fun and get creative to make it personal to the person you are giving it to!

What’s in my beach bag?

If you are anything like me, you are a total beach bum. I get out in the sun to play in the waves as many chances as I can get! I mean, who wouldn’t in a little beach town? It’s only my most favorite thing to do–duh! Being prepared to spend the day near the shore is important though. And has a mermaid myself, (wink wink) I thought I would show you what I bring along with me! Let’s get started.

First off, having a happy tummy is always important! I make sure to bring along my all time favorite snack. I like to fuel up with smoothie bowls. They are a fresh, light snack perfect for a hot summers day. Now, I walk to the beach so it’s easy for me to grab and go. However, feel free to pour a smoothie in a to-go thermos and bring it along!

Besides bringing along my favorite wrist stack, here are the essentials to a successful beach day!

-My Shibori round towel (Shop it on the website)

-I keep all my little items such as: my favorite pair of sun glasses, tanning lotion to keep my skin hydrated, chap stick and beach accessories in my Ocean Child Clutch! (Coming to the website SOON!)

I always infuse my water with a few frozen berries! This is a must on a hot beach day.

Mother’s Day Heart Mug

If your mom is anything like mine, she is always on the go and drinks LOTS of coffee every morning. Let me tell ya, not one morning is ever missed. I thought it would be perfect to gift her a hand painted mug for Mother’s Day. I mean, she can never have too many coffee mugs. Especially one that’s hand painted with lots of love! This super easy and cute DIY will leave you unstressed and proud to gift!

Here is what you will need:

  1. Paint pen
  2. Plain mug with a handle that mimics the shape of half a heart.
  3. Mod Podge and paint brush
  4. Scrap paper and scissors

Start by holding a piece of scrap paper up beside the handle of the mug. Trace the handle. Once traced fold in half and cut along side the traced line. This should leave you with a heart-shaped cut out.

Put the heart cut out in the crease where the handle is. Use your paint pen to create random dots that go around the shape of the heart. (The handle being the other side of the heart)

The random dots should be close together and slightly bigger. As you begin to expand, spread out the painted dots and shrink them in size. Take a look at the photo below to use as your guide.  Expand the dots about 3-4 inches from the handle.

Allow the paint to totally dry. Once it is finished drying, go in with mod podge and coat it all over. This will protect the paint from ever coming off.

Coffee Bath

Need a quick way to warm up and reenergize during these cold months? We have just the thing. A Coffee Bath! Coffee Baths are nourishing for dry skin and they smell AMAZING. Take some time to pamper yourself. You deserve it!

What You’ll Need:
1) Coffee scrub (Make one yourself or use a pre-made one. We used frank body.)
2) Essential oil
3) Candles
4) A good book
5) Tea

6 New Year’s Resolutions that Will Actually Improve your Life

Take some time to reflect back on your year and look forward to the next 365 days by setting a New Year’s Resolution that will actually improve your life. Here are 6 ideas to get you inspired to make 2016 your best year yet!

1) Focus on loving yourself and accepting your body for what it is. When you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror, say out loud ‘I love you’ to your reflection with a smile. It sounds so weird, but practice this every day for a year!

2) Work on improving your brain and read one new book every month. Mix it up with different themes like non-fiction, self-improvement, fiction, romance, biographies or even recipe books to get your brain training in full gear.

3) Unleash your inner artist and challenge your creativity. Promise to start a new way of expressing yourself each month like creative writing, painting, dance, sketching, design, photography, etc. There’s an artist in all of us!

4) Be the kindest person you know. Write this down on a sticky note and post it up somewhere you’ll see it every day. Work towards doing small deeds for strangers, loved ones and your community throughout the year. This could be volunteering for a few hours at the local shelter, mowing your neighbours lawn or babysitting without complaining.

5) Find your true happiness. If you think about how many years we get to live on this wonderful planet and the amount of time in that life we devote to making other’s happy, it’s kind of crazy. Why not make 2016 the year you devote entirely to finding your own true happiness? Take that trip you’ve always dreamed of, pursue that job you know you’re worthy of or tell that special someone you love them even if they have no idea who you are!

6) Live a simpler life. Instead of accumulating and keeping things throughout the year, concentrate on editing the things in your life that you no longer require. This could be in the form of toxic relationships, emotional baggage, clothes you don’t wear anymore, extra “luxuries” you could technically live without (TV, manicures, that pair of new shoes…)

8 Alternative Christmas Tree Ideas

4) Elegant Doily Christmas Trees

Create lacy winter trees with paper doilies, hot glue and a few sturdy twigs or skewers. Cut a wedge out of a round doily and bring the cut edges together to form a cone. The size of your wedge will determine how narrow the cone is. Glue the cone together and slide onto the stick. Glue into place. Add more cones in decreasing sizes to create a layered tree.

Who says evergreens should have all the fun? Carefully-arranged succulents look wild in the shape of a Christmas tree. And if you live in a temperate climate, this tree would be especially appropriate.

Try a new twist on traditional holiday topiaries by covering cone-shaped foam forms with shells in assorted colors and sizes. Attach them with hot glue, starting at the bottom and working your way up.
