Pura Vida x Surfrider Foundation: Beach Cleanup

June 19, 2019 — by Kristy Ryan

In honor of International Surf Day on June 15th, Pura Vida sponsored a beach cleanup at La Jolla Shores with the Surfrider Foundation (and a few other awesome local partners, too!). Check out a quick recap and some of our favorite pics below!

At 9am, we collected our gloves and bags, and set off down the beach to start clearing the area of trash, microplastics, and as many other harmful items as possible. We especially kept an eye out for microplastics, as they can be hard to spot and extremely harmful, since they’re easily mistaken for food and can be ingested by marine life.

Once our bags were full, we returned back to the main area to return the trash so it could be sorted and properly disposed of. Everyone that participated in the cleanup was rewarded with a Surfrider bracelet and some other awesome prizes to thank them for their support!

With a morning of hard work behind us, we began a fun day of yoga, cornhole, surfing, and just enjoyed the gorgeous day at the beach.

While we enjoyed the activities on land, Urban Surf 4 Kids, a local outreach organization that works with orphan youth and foster kids, brought out a group of kids for their first surf session!

We closed out the day with the awesome Surfrider volunteers giving a visual presentation on plastic pollution, and great tips and tricks to refuse or reduce single use plastic.

HUGE thanks to our friends at Surfrider San Diego for putting on such an awesome event, and to our partners at Urban Surf 4 Kids, Brew Dr. Kombucha, Capital One, and more for joining! Together, with the help of the 150+ volunteers, we cleaned up over 100 lbs of trash!

Be sure to follow @puravidaevents to stay in the know about other upcoming charity events, including future beach cleanups! You can also shop our Surfrider Foundation bracelet to show your support. For every purchase, we’ll donate 10% of the net sales back to the Surfrider Foundation to further their efforts in keeping our oceans and coasts clean!

3 Simple Ways to Protect Our Oceans and Marine Life

December 18, 2018 — by Kristy Ryan

Not-so-fun fact: Every minute, one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans. As if that’s not scary enough, it turns out this might have an even bigger impact on our precious marine life than we knew.

One recent study found microplastics—tiny pieces of plastic debris that come from any number of sources—in the gut of every single sea turtle examined (including more than 100 turtles from seven different species). To be exact, more than 800 plastic particles were found in these sea turtles, including everything from rubber bands, balloons and tires to cigarettes and pieces of clothing. The sea turtles often mistake these bits of pollution for food, and in some cases simply aren’t able to avoid all the debris surrounding them.

Young sea turtles are especially likely to mistake to the plastics for food, but sea turtles of all age and species are at risk, including the Pura Vida turtle, Vida, below. So sad!

Unfortunately, sea turtles aren’t the only ones being harmed by the ever-increasing amount of plastic that’s entering our oceans on a daily basis. Earlier this year, a short-fin male pilot whale died in Thailand after eating more than 17 pounds of plastic bags and packaging. And every year, millions of seabirds suffer the same fate from consuming plastic waste.

This is why it’s crucial for all of us to act right now to help protect our oceans and the marine life living within them. If we don’t, the amount of plastic in the ocean will likely increase tenfold by 2020. And by 2050, that means there would be more plastic than fish in our oceans.

But enough with the bad news; here’s the good news: We can all make a difference! Big changes start with tiny steps, including three moves you can make right now to reduce your impact and protect our marine life:

1. Reduce your plastic usage and waste.

  • Use a reusable cup, mug, or bottle whenever possible.
  • Avoid products with plastic microbeads.
  • BYOS – Bring your own straw!
  • Use Beeswax wraps instead of cling wrap.

2. Attend a beach cleanup

Grab some friends or coworkers and organize your own cleanup, or work with a local organization to find a scheduled cleanup at a beach near you! Click here to read more about our recent beach cleanup in San Diego.

3. Support our partners!

We’ll donate 10% of net sales back to our awesome partners that are helping to keep our beaches and marine life plastic free.

Afternoon Ambience

So maybe summer can’t last forever. Getting back into the swing of everyday life can be exhausting! Don’t let the hustle and bustle get the best of you. Relax and mellow out. Turn on some afternoon acoustic, burn your favorite incense, pour yourself a cup of tea. Vibe to your own rhythm.

Take a moment for yourself and do what makes you happy. Don’t clutter your mind with negativity.

Write it all out. Think good thoughts. What inspires you?

Dream it up, whatever it is that keeps your brain busy.

Never stop creating. Think bigger! Always stay inspired and most importantly, do what sets your soul on fire.

DIY Moon Phase Wall Hanging

June 23, 2016 — by Chelsey Bishoff

IMG_1513.jpg

Stay wild moon child! What gypsy wouldn’t want this hanging in their room? It makes for the most perfect, calming finishing touch to your space full of gems and wonder. We’re not sure about you guys, but we adore simple, handmade treasures to decorate with– so we just HAD to create this one. What makes it even better is that almost all the supplies can be found in your craft drawer at home! Want the in on how we did it? Come on, we’ll take you step by step– Follow us!!

What you’ll need:

1) Thin cardboard (we used an empty cereal box)

2) Jute or any sort of string you prefer

3) Scissors, tape and pencil

4) Silver or gold paint along with a paint brush

5) A small rock or heavy bead

6) A twig

Get Started:

Step 1:

Start by using your pencil to draw two circles. You may want to use a household item to trace around to form a perfect circle. (We used the base of a candle.)

After you have both circles, you will draw two crescent moons. (If you need to trace thats okay, too. There aren’t any rules to this game… phew!)

Lastly, you will draw the main crescent that will be placed in the middle. This one will have a deeper arch, resembling the letter“C.”

Step 2:

One by one paint each moon. We used silver as the main base coat. After that dried, we went in on top of it and added some gold glitter so it would shine just a bit. But you can do whatever you like.

Step 3:

After allowing the paint to fully dry, tape the jute onto the backs of the cardboard cutouts in correct order to create the phases of the moon! (As shown in the photo below) Make sure to also leave a good bit of leftover jute at the top and bottom.

Step 4:

Tie the rock or bead to the bottom of the jute. This will weigh it down just enough to keep the jute totally straight.

Step 5:

Take the moon phase wall hanging and tie it in the middle of the twig.

After that’s tied, take another strand of jute to create the hanger.
