November 18, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

The holiday season is coming up and during this time, it can get pretty hectic with balancing work, exams, school, family, friends and also finding time for yourself. Here are 6 yoga poses you can practice whenever you can spare a few minutes that will automatically lower your stress levels:

1) Child’s Pose

The calming child’s pose is a resting posture that can help quiet the mind, easing stress and anxiety while gently stretching the back.

2) Seated Forward Bend

This pose provides a complete stretch of the entire backside of the body from the back of the head through the heels. Slowly breathe into the pose and lower towards your knees. If your nose can touch your legs great! If not, even better!

3) Eagle Pose

The active and empowering eagle pose can help ward off stress by improving concentration and balance and also by opening up the shoulders, upper back and hips.

4) Corpse Pose

Most yoga practices end with several minutes spent in savasana, and it can easily be the most calming part of the whole thing. The pose puts the body completely at ease and emphasizes total relaxation. Savasana can trigger the body’s “relaxation response,” a state of deep rest that slows the breathing and lowers the blood pressure while quieting the nervous system.

5) Cat Pose

The cat pose soothes and stretches the lower back, relieving stress while gently massaging the spine. Try arching and rounding the back 10 times in a row while focusing on deep inhaling and exhaling.

6) Downward Dog

This popular pose is common for a reason: it stretches your entire body from your neck to your toes. Also, being inverted has great benefits. Any pose where the heart is above the head is a good one for the circulatory system because it encourages blood flow throughout the body. An active circulatory system helps flush toxins from our body, keep our immune system in tip-top shape, and helps regulate blood pressure.

5 Reasons Why You Should Juice

September 23, 2014 — by Griffin Thall

Juicing. It’s everywhere. Being seen with a fresh juice in hand has never been more trendy. Instagram feeds are blowing up with images of people posing with their juices. Even better, it’s not a bad fad to follow at all. Juicing has endless benefits to it, not even including the cool Iinstagram posts you’ll get from it.

Here are 5 reasons why you should start juicing:

1.Since juicing removes the indigestible fiber found in the outside of fruits and vegetables, nutrients are available in much higher quantities than if one just ate the fruit or vegetable whole. Juicing therefore allows us to better absorb all the nutrients in these drinks and get more bang for our buck.

2. Many people struggle with getting the correct amount of vegetable servings each day. 5 to 8 servings of vegetables are suggested, but that is nearly impossible to get every day. Juicing can contain all of these servings all wrapped up into one delicious, hip, and nutritional drink.

3. A diet high in fruits and vegetables can help cure or prevent thousands of illnesses even. Green vegetables, for example, contain phytochemicals that can offer protection against cancer causing substances. Citrus fruits also help fight cancer causing substances through making it easier for your body to remove carcinogens.

4. Of course, by juicing we also get the traditional nutrients offered by these foods such as vitamin C (mango, grapefruit, kiwi), vitamin A (kale, broccoli, beets), and vitamin E (avocado, blueberries, blackberries). Fruit juices are also a good source of essential minerals like copper, potassium, magnesium, sodium, and iron.

5. It looks awesome. The colors that turn out from juicing various fruits and vegetables are ridiculous. Add some beets to your juice, the color will be the most vibrant pink, add carrots, it’ll turn out an amazing orange color. It’s fun to mix up your own combos too. A great combination to try out is carrot, apples, lemon, orange, and ginger. With all the nutrients from these various fruits and vegetables, this is not only a delicious, amazingly colored drink but also a boost to your immunity.

There’s no reason not to try juicing. Just from looking at all the health benefits from having a juice, one can see how nutritional it really is. And if that doesn’t convince you, at least think about how cool your Instagram feed is going to look.
