How to Make the Best Acai Bowl

May 11, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

After a day of sun, salt and sand, whip up the perfect post-surf snack: a healthy and delicious acai bowl. We let Haleiwa Bowls show us how to make the BEST acai bowl on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii and maybe even the world!

2 C Total of Frozen Blueberries, Strawberries & Bananas (equal parts of each)
Sambazon Pure Acai Smoothie Pack
Splash of Milk (We love coconut or rice milk!)
Your Toppings of Choice:
Granola, Bee Pollen, Honey, Chia Seeds or Diced Fruit. Get creative!

1) Combine the frozen fruit and Sambazon Acai in your blender. You may need to add a splash of milk to get everything moving. Turn your blender on and take breaks in between blending to stir the frozen mixture.

2) Scoop the yumminess into a bowl. Top with the granola first.

3) Then add some fresh fruit, bee pollen and finish off with a drizzle of honey.

4) Grab a spoon and enjoy on your lanai while the ocean breeze keeps you company!

Gold & Silver Bangles: Owlette Hawaii

Thanks so much to Kylie, Anna and Sam for showing us how it’s done! If you’re ever on the North Shore of Oahu, be sure to head to Haleiwa Bowls (@halewiabowls).

We believe that travel is life. We can’t stop thinking about our next adventure or dreaming of everything from exotic beaches to snow-capped mountains. We are wanderlusters. And here are 14 struggles that only we can relate to:

1) Spending your entire day at work looking at flights and getting nothing done.
2) Post-surf trip blues.
3) Losing your flip flops.
4) Drinking from a cup and not a coconut.
5) Sand. In. Everything.
6) Differentiating between foreign currencies in your wallet.
7) Jetlag.
8) Ridiculous tan lines.
9) Finding the love of your life then realizing you have to go home.
10) Being fully clothed.
11) Your tan fades and so does your happiness.
12) Washing out your beach hair.
13) Extreme FOMO from seeing other people’s vacation photos on Instagram.
14) The never ending urge to travel, explore and seek out new adventure.

4 Yoga Mantras to Improve Your Life

May 4, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Sometimes our lives can get a bit hectic and it’s hard to find time to slow down. This is where a mantra can really help you focus and make the most of your down time. Mantras are chants in Sanskrit used in yoga to keep our concentration focused inwardly and quiet the distractions of the outside world. Try to take a few minutes every day to repeat these mantras quietly to yourself and help anchor your wandering mind to find some inner peace:

1) OM
The sound of the universe. It’s the first, original vibration, representing the birth, death and re-birth process. OM is a great way to begin and end a yoga or mediation practice, and also comes in handy when you just need to chill out.

2) Om Namah Shivaya
This is a great mantra to help build self-confidence, reminding us that we are all made up of divine energy and should treat ourselves accordingly.

3) Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu
This mantra is a powerful way to dedicate yourself to living a life of non-harming and being of service to the greater good. This mantra encourages cooperation, compassion and living in harmony with the environment, animals and our fellow human beings.

4) Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
The peace mantra is focused on providing peace of mind, stress relief and increasing harmony in your surroundings.

4 Ways to Make your Space your Sanctuary

April 21, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

You want to live in more than just a house. It should be a home filled with love, happiness and peace. The outside world can get pretty hectic, so here are a few ways to turn your space into a soothing sanctuary:

1) Create coziness. Find a quiet corner in your bedroom and setup a place to sit and unwind. This could be a desk with a comfy chair or a bunch of pillows and blankets laid out on a plush carpet — the more the merrier!

2) Add your personal touch. Hang up wall prints from artists you love, frame photos of happy memories and display items that make you smile (travel souvenirs, awards, handwritten quotes).

3) Green is good. Plants are a great addition to any sanctuary. They bring the beauty of nature indoors and also freshen the air with more oxygen.

4) Indulge your senses and set the mood. Add lavender scented candles for a calm setting, vibrant artwork for inspiration or a small set of speakers to play music for any mood!

Create Your Own Zen Garden

April 16, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Big or small, outside or in, a garden can offer a place of calm, peace and tranquility. Here are some handy tips on how to create your own zen garden even if your green thumb isn’t so green:

1. Keep it to a minimum. Creating a place of serenity is all about open space and feeling light. Your zen garden should feel light and airy, so keep the greenery, furniture and design elements to a minimum. Less is definitely more!

2. Add a place for sand. Whether it be a large, open box in your back yard or a small container on your desk. And don’t forget the rake! Create multiple patterns in the sand to mimic the ripples of the ocean. Don’t you already feel relaxed?

3. Add zen features like Buddha statues, pebbles, stones or rocks.

4. If you have the space and resources, having a small water fountain ups the zen factor by a ton. Hearing the soft sound of trickling water creates positive energy and we could all use more of that!

5. If you don’t have an outdoor space, create a desktop zen garden using a small tray, some sand, a rake and a few stones. When you’re stressed, take a few minutes to create a pattern by drawing in the sand with your rake.

Tips + Tricks to Make Your Jewelry Last

April 3, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Any good wardrobe has a jewelry collection to match and just like that pair of jeans you had forever, you want your bling to shine like the first day you bought it. Here are a few tips to make your jewelry last:

  1. Store each piece in it’s own bag. Like any precious piece, keep your accessories in the bags or pouches they came with to prevent it from tarnishing and getting scratched. Those clear daily pill boxes also work great for separating everything out and keeping organized.
  2. Apply lotion, perfume and makeup BEFORE your jewelry. The oils and ingredients in your cosmetics can dull your jewelry and build up over time. Remember to put on your jewelry last.
  3. Rinse. I love wearing jewelry to the beach, but when it comes to staying golden, your jewelry doesn’t count. Even the smallest bit of salt can begin to rust any type of metal in a day or two, so remember give your jewelry a good rinse in warm, soapy water along with your bikini.
  4. Clean and polish. Sometimes, accessories are an investment and it’s important to keep them perfectly polished and clean. Use a dedicated jewelry cleaner kit every few months to keep shinin’ on!
