PV Going Green

April 15, 2020 — by Kelsey Kimball

Over the last year, we have made some exciting eco- friendly changes to our packaging! We are proud to say every style you receive from us in the mail comes in a biodegradable bag that you can bury in your backyard!

Our biodegradable bag journey, started eight months ago in July of 2019! Home composting takes about 12- 18 months, so the bags are well on their way to fully compost and give us peace of mind knowing we are doing what we can to decrease our footprint!

Once you receive your new PV goodies, there are three ways to compost, depending on local availability:

  • Curbside: If a city picks up curbside compost, they’ll have specific rules for what they accept.
  • Dropoff: If there’s no curbside composting option, people can check the Biocycle directory to find industrial facilities in their area.
  • At home: Compostable plastics need very high heat to break down in under a year. They should break down in home bins within 12-18 months with the right combination of heat, moisture, air, and volume. Cal Recycle has a great guide to home composting.

#PVGivesBack for the Holidays!

December 19, 2019 — by Kristy Ryan

‘Tis the season to give and give back.

To kick off the holiday season this year, Pura Vida teamed up with our local charity partner, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, to host a toy drive, ensuring that every student has an awesome gift to open for the holidays.

From December 7th – December 15th, we asked all of you to help us collect gifts for the students, including toys, clothes, accessories, sports equipment and more. It was such as success, and we were blown away by all of your generosity!

With the help of our local retail partners Urban Girl Accessories and Hansen’s, and our national brand partner Indy Brand Clothing, we were able to collect hundreds of gifts, including:

  • Cute and cozy tee’s, sweatshirts and hats from Indy Brand
  • Lego sets
  • Play-Doh and slime sets
  • Stuffed animals
  • Fleece blankets
  • Art sets
  • Books
  • Hot wheels
  • and so much more!

The gifts were then collected by the Boys & Girls Clubs, where their awesome team of volunteers sorted and wrapped each gift so they’d be ready to hand out at their holiday party, which we were fortunate enough to attend!

The PV team helped run a few of the party activities, like face painting, arts and crafts, and carnival games, where the kids played games to win tickets for fun prizes like bikes and scooters.

Once the games were over, Santa stopped by to start giving out the presents, and the kids had the BEST time opening the gifts!

We were so thankful to help put a smile on the faces of so many sweet, smart, and deserving kids. Thank you Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego for including us, and for all the work you do!

Want to help support all the amazing work the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego provides? Shop our Boys & Girls Club original bracelet!

#MyPuraVida Charity Campaign

October 1, 2019 — by Kelsey Kimball

From September 23 – September 27, we shared why our content creators, fans, and members of the Pura Vida team wear their Pura Vida Charity Bracelets using the hashtag, #MyPuraVida! Read on to hear their stories!

Chelsey Bishoff wearing the Mental Health Awareness Bracelet

#MyPuraVida is important to me because health isn’t all about your diet plan, your work out routine and making sure you get all your steps in that day. Health is about taking care of yourself and making sure you show yourself love every day. It took me a while to realize your mental health is just as important as your physical health. It is so incredibly easy for me to push myself passed my limit, become overwhelmed and not allow time in my daily routine to just B R E A T H E. Giving my personal life attention by letting myself actually relax for once, recollect and regain perspective on things is a game changer. We have to take care of ourselves and acknowledge that it is 1000% okay to not be okay. Reach out to a friend, talk about things on your mental. Let it out! Because the sooner we talk about it, the easier it is to let go. I encourage you all to take time out for yourself this week. It’s okay. You deserve it.” – @chelseybishoff, wearing the Mental Health Awareness Bracelet đź’š

Gg Rae wearing the Anxiety Disorder Awareness Bracelet

“I wear #MyPuraVida Anxiety Disorder Awareness Bracelet because I am passionate about supporting charities that help individuals experiencing these uncontrolled emotions. Growing up I’ve always struggled with my own depression & anxiety, knowing that it is definitely not something easy to go through. I believe that mental health should be acknowledged more and talked through; helping everyone who are experiencing these emotions, that they are not alone. I honestly love my bracelet with my whole heart & wear it everyday which always reminds me to push through when I’m struggling with these emotions. 💕” – @ggrae wearing the Anxiety Disorder Awareness Bracelet

Nesrin Danan wearing the Depression Awareness Bracelet

“I wear #MyPuraVida because depression is something i’ve dealt with since i was a teen. It comes in waves, and each wave is different. Learning healthy ways to manage and float above it has been a tough experience for me, but one of the most important things that helped me was realizing i wasn’t alone and there are so many people and resources out there willing to listen.” – @blackprints wearing the Depression Awareness Bracelet

Marla Fay wearing the NEGU: Never Ever Give Up Bracelet

#MyPuraVida is extremely important to me because it is a daily reminder to never ever give up. Two close friends of mine passed away at a very young age due to cancer. Briana Vega and Patrick Battle were two of the most positive and loving people I knew. They never ever gave up and always looked toward the positive, even in the hardest of situations. Wearing this bracelet reminds me to keep their spirit alive, fight hand in hand with others, and to never ever give up, for them and for everyone.” – @marlafay wearing the NEGU: Never Ever Give Up Charity Bracelet đź’™

Maddie Perry, wearing the Breast Cancer Awareness Pack

“My grandma passed away from Breast Cancer when I was nine and, ever since then, raising awareness to help the cause has always had a special place in my heart. When I wear #MyPuraVida bracelets, I’m flooded with the sweetest memories from the time I was able to spend with her and I also feel empowered to help encourage and support those still fighting the disease. So many moms, sisters, grandmas, daughters (and even brothers, dads, sons and grandpas!) are fighting everyday and when I wear these bracelets, I’m reminded to send up a prayer and help support in any way I can.” – @maddieperry123, wearing the Breast Cancer Awareness Pack, Breast Cancer Awareness Charm, & Breast Cancer Awareness Original.

Why do you wear your Pura Vida? Post and share your story for a chance to be featured using the hashtag,#MyPuraVida.

Pura Vida x Surfrider Foundation: Beach Cleanup

June 19, 2019 — by Kristy Ryan

In honor of International Surf Day on June 15th, Pura Vida sponsored a beach cleanup at La Jolla Shores with the Surfrider Foundation (and a few other awesome local partners, too!). Check out a quick recap and some of our favorite pics below!

At 9am, we collected our gloves and bags, and set off down the beach to start clearing the area of trash, microplastics, and as many other harmful items as possible. We especially kept an eye out for microplastics, as they can be hard to spot and extremely harmful, since they’re easily mistaken for food and can be ingested by marine life.

Once our bags were full, we returned back to the main area to return the trash so it could be sorted and properly disposed of. Everyone that participated in the cleanup was rewarded with a Surfrider bracelet and some other awesome prizes to thank them for their support!

With a morning of hard work behind us, we began a fun day of yoga, cornhole, surfing, and just enjoyed the gorgeous day at the beach.

While we enjoyed the activities on land, Urban Surf 4 Kids, a local outreach organization that works with orphan youth and foster kids, brought out a group of kids for their first surf session!

We closed out the day with the awesome Surfrider volunteers giving a visual presentation on plastic pollution, and great tips and tricks to refuse or reduce single use plastic.

HUGE thanks to our friends at Surfrider San Diego for putting on such an awesome event, and to our partners at Urban Surf 4 Kids, Brew Dr. Kombucha, Capital One, and more for joining! Together, with the help of the 150+ volunteers, we cleaned up over 100 lbs of trash!

Want to help?

Be sure to follow @puravidaevents to stay in the know about other upcoming charity events, including future beach cleanups! You can also shop our Surfrider Foundation bracelet to show your support. For every purchase, we’ll donate 10% of the net sales back to the Surfrider Foundation to further their efforts in keeping our oceans and coasts clean!

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego – SMART Girls Event

May 20, 2019 — by Kristy Ryan

To help kick off our new partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, we stopped by their recent SMART Girls event with Power Crunch to learn more about what they do!

Since 2016, our friends at Power Crunch have supported Boys & Girls Clubs of America by investing in the organization’s efforts to promote health and wellness across Boys & Girls Clubs 4,300 sites. This May, they hosted a SMART (Skills, Mastery and Resilience Training) Girls event at a local San Diego club to teach the girls about the power of positivity, goal setting, and female empowerment!

After fueling up on Power Crunch bars, and armed with their awesome new Boys and Girls Clubs bracelet, the girls kicked off the event by listening to local pro surfer, Alyssa Spencer, talk about what how important it is to follow your passions and dreams, and how setting goals and putting in the time and hard work can get you there!

Then we split up into small groups, and worked together on worksheets that helped them identify their individual goals, and the steps they can take to achieve them!

Feeling energized and inspired from all of the talk around goals and dreams, we closed out the afternoon with a fun yoga class to help us connect our minds and bodies, and be thankful for taking to honor our goals.

We were so impressed by the excitement and enthusiasm the girls had, and how they treated each other with so much kindness and support. We can’t wait to continue supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, and are so thankful to the whole Power Crunch team for inviting us to participate in this amazing and empowering day!

Want to help?

Shop our new Boys & Girls Clubs bracelet to show your support for all of the incredible work they do to create a positive and lasting impact on thousands of youth! 10% of net sales from this bracelet will help fund the variety of enrichment programs, activities and services within the community.

Adopt Don’t Shop – The Barking Lot, San Diego

April 23, 2019 — by Kayla Holmes

When you mix incredible Spring weather with happy pups, what could be better?! This past weekend, the Pura Vida Team enjoyed a beautiful Sunday in San Diego walking some adorable rescue dogs that are available for adoption from The Barking Lot!

We teamed up with The Barking Lot, a volunteer-run non-profit that rescues dogs from euthanasia and helps find their forever homes. Since 2016, they’ve also been rescuing dogs from the illegal meat trade in Thailand with their partner, the Soi Dog Foundation. To say we were excited to get outdoors and spend some time walking these dogs was an understatement. The weather in San Diego finally started to warm up, so it was the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.

It was such an incredible experience to grow special bonds in just an hour with these pups, and one of our team members even put in an application for her the puppy she walked (we’re crossing our fingers for her)! We learned some of the heartbreaking stories behind our dogs, and a few of us were able to spend our time with dogs that were saved from the illegal dog meat trade. Despite their past, all of the dogs were so excited, happy, well behaved, and definitely made us happy for the hour we got to spend with them.

I think we made them just as happy as well!

If you live in southern California, check out The Barking Lot when searching for a furry friend to add to your family. You can also show your support for other cats and dogs in need of a forever home by purchasing our Karma Cat + Zen Dog bracelet! For every bracelet purchased, we’ll donate 10% of net sales to the organization to further their efforts in rescuing homeless animals.

Adopt, don’t shop.

9 Eco-Friendly Alternatives to Everyday Products!

April 17, 2019 — by Kristy Ryan

Earth Day is one of our favorite holidays.

No matter where you are, the environment around you is likely looking a little greener (hello, spring!), so what better time to check in with yourself and see how you can make your own life greener, too?!

We selected a few of our favorite strategies to make easy, eco-friendly swaps in your everyday life, and included some of our favorite products that are PV staff tested and approved!

So put on your favorite environmental charity bracelet—like the 1% for the Planet or For the Oceans bracelet—and keep reading to learn more about some of our best sustainable swaps! Plus, comment which environmental charity you’d like to see us partner with next to be entered into a giveaway to win ALL of the products listed!

1) Say no to plastic straws, and bring your own reusable straw instead!

According to one study, the US uses 500 million straws every day! The majority of these straws end up in landfills and in our oceans, where they often are mistaken for food by marine life. We highly recommend purchasing your own reusable straw to take with you when you go out to eat, or even just to use at home or the office! offers a great assortment of reusable straw options, including stainless steel, silicone and paper straws.

2) Ditch the plastic wrap in favor of sustainable beeswax wrap!

Leftovers make the best lunch the next day, but it can be challenging to find the right size storage container, and plastic wrap will just end up in a landfill. Using beeswax food storage wraps is a great way to keep your food fresh and secure, and the best part is that they’re reusable! Bee’s Wrap makes one of our favorite food wraps—how cute is this print!? They’re made of beeswax, organic cotton, organic jojoba oil and tree resin, and can easily be washed with cool water and mild dish soap.

3) Bring Your Own Water Bottle!

Refill stations are everywhere now, so it’s never been easier to hydrate on the go! There are tons of reusable water bottles available, in many different materials and sizes depending on your preference. We’re big fans of the Soma water bottles, which are from high-quality, shatter-resistant glass, with an easy grip protective sleeve. Soma is also a certified B Corp and is committed to sustainable business practices, including using post-consumer waste and recyclable materials!

4) Bring the beach to your kitchen with eco-friendly coconut bowls!

A kitchen swap thats cute *and* eco-friendly? Sign us up! We’re all familiar with the many benefits of coconut oil and coconut water, but what happens to the shells that these products are harvested from? Coconut Bowls discovered that 99% of shells are discarded as waste or burned, causing harm to the environment. They prevent this by working with small family farms to collect, clean and craft the shells into eco-friendly bowls. Perfect for acai bowls, right?!

5) Upgrade your beauty routine with organic and eco-friendly skin and hair products!

So many of the beauty products claim to be “natural” and “clean,” and it can be hard to know which products are truly good for you and the environment! We love Captain Blankenship’s collection of products made from organic and domestically grown ingredients whenever possible. They never use synthetic preservatives, parabens or sulfates, and only use recyclable and reusable glass packaging. We recommend the Mermaid Sea Salt Hair Spray for when you want to look fresh off the beach!

6) Protect your skin with reef safe sun care!

Summer is right around the corner, which means long days at the beach soaking up the sun! There are countless options of sunscreen available that will protect your skin, but some of the ingredients commonly found in many sunscreens—like oxybenzone and octinoxate—can have negative effects on coral reefs. MANDA makes effective (and organic!) sun creams and sun pastes that are not only coral reef safe, but also come in sustainable packaging!

7) Grow Your own herbs!

Save yourself a trip to the grocery store and grow your favorite herbs right at home! The best part is you can grow them right from your kitchen counter – no yard needed. Modern Sprout makes super cute indoor garden kits that you’ll want to display. We love the Garden Jars, which come equipped with everything you’ll need to start growing, just add water and sunshine!

8) BYOM – Bring Your Own Mug!

Our generation is always on the go, and that means we often need our food and drinks to go, too—especially coffee! Those plastic (or plastic-lined) cups our favorite lattes come in may be convenient, but they unfortunately have a big impact on our landfills. To help reduce the amount of cups ending up in our landfills and oceans, just bring your own mug! We love Hydroflask’s 12oz Insulated Coffee Mugs for an easy-to-transport mug that keeps our coffee hot for hours. Oh, and it’s BPA-free, too!

9) Look for clothes made from recycled materials!

Clothes are an essential part of everyday life. And if you’re like many of us, leggings are super essential, too! Girlfriend Collective makes some of our favorite leggings. They’re ultra-comfortable, come in tons of colors and the best part is they’re made from recycled water bottles! Each pair of Girlfriend leggings diverts 25 water bottles from landfills and saves 3.11 gallons of water!

Don’t forget to tell us which environmental charity or non-profit we should partner with below for a chance to win ALL of these amazing items, and a few surprise bracelets!

Giveaway is CLOSED! Thank you all for your amazing suggestions!

Charity Spotlight: Colton Underwood Legacy Foundation

February 10, 2019 — by Kristy Ryan

You’ve seen Colton Underwood all over ABC, you may even know he founded a charity, but what exactly is the Legacy Foundation?

This week, we’re excited to spotlight our charity partner, the Legacy Foundation. Read on to learn more about their commitment to helping people living with Cystic Fibrosis, and how you can help!

“The Legacy Foundation is a non-profit organization that was created by former NFL player, Colton Underwood to empower people with cystic fibrosis to live fully, dream big, and support each other.”

FIrst of all, What is Cystic Fibrosis?

The Legacy Foundation website describes Cystic Fibrosis (CF) as a life-threatening genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. An estimated 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide) have CF, with roughly 1,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

Cystic Fibrosis causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. People living with CF undergo a daily treatment and medication regimen in order to clear their lungs and maintain their health. These treatments can greatly improve the life span, and quality of life, for CF patients, but unfortunately, they can be time consuming and expensive.

How does Colton Underwood’s Legacy Foundation help?

The Legacy Foundation’s mission is to minimize the challenges that come with accessing the optimal treatment, and empower people with CF to “live fully, dream big, and support each other.”

Founded in 2015 by former NFL Linebacker (and current Bachelor!), Colton Underwood, the Legacy Foundation raises funds for research, and provides equipment and resources for people of all ages living with Cystic Fibrosis. Since its founding, the Legacy Foundation has given nearly $100,000 in cash and equipment donations to CF patients, clinics, and research organizations focused on treating people living with CF. This includes:

  • $60,000 raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation during three football camps to support clinical studies and research.
  • $10,000 raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at a Children’s Hospital to purchase aerodynamic bikes and medical equipment for patients
  • Visits to children’s hospitals with NFL players to brighten the day of patients.
  • Partnered with International Biophysics, the makers of AffloVest, to provide 50 AffloVests to CF patients across the United States through the Legacy Project.

Pretty amazing, right?! The best part is YOU can help too!

Click here to donate directly to the Colton Underwood Legacy Foundation, or shop the Colton Underwood for Cystic Fibrosis bracelet and Legacy Pack on our website! For each purchase, we’ll donate 25% of net profits to the Legacy Foundation.

Thank you for helping us support the Legacy Foundation!
