Create Your Own Zen Garden

Big or small, outside or in, a garden can offer a place of calm, peace and tranquility. Here are some handy tips on how to create your own zen garden even if your green thumb isn’t so green:

1. Keep it to a minimum. Creating a place of serenity is all about open space and feeling light. Your zen garden should feel light and airy, so keep the greenery, furniture and design elements to a minimum. Less is definitely more!

2. Add a place for sand. Whether it be a large, open box in your back yard or a small container on your desk. And don’t forget the rake! Create multiple patterns in the sand to mimic the ripples of the ocean. Don’t you already feel relaxed?

3. Add zen features like Buddha statues, pebbles, stones or rocks.

4. If you have the space and resources, having a small water fountain ups the zen factor by a ton. Hearing the soft sound of trickling water creates positive energy and we could all use more of that!

5. If you don’t have an outdoor space, create a desktop zen garden using a small tray, some sand, a rake and a few stones. When you’re stressed, take a few minutes to create a pattern by drawing in the sand with your rake.

Banana Berry Smoothie Bowl

Craving a sweet and healthy snack? Try our super easy Banana Berry Smoothie Bowl. Recipe below!

Ingredients:
2 C Frozen Mixed Berries
1 Banana
1 C Milk (We like coconut obvi!)
Your Toppings of Choice (Bananas, chia seeds, shredded coconut, hemp hearts, honey, granola, fruit, whatever!)

Directions:

  1. Add the milk, frozen berries and banana in that order to your blender. Cover tightly and turn the power on.
  2. The mixture will be thick so you may need to stop blending and stir every few seconds.
  3. Top with your favourite morning munchies like chia seeds, shredded coconut and banana.

Tips + Tricks to Make Your Jewelry Last

Any good wardrobe has a jewelry collection to match and just like that pair of jeans you had forever, you want your bling to shine like the first day you bought it. Here are a few tips to make your jewelry last:

  1. Store each piece in it’s own bag. Like any precious piece, keep your accessories in the bags or pouches they came with to prevent it from tarnishing and getting scratched. Those clear daily pill boxes also work great for separating everything out and keeping organized.
  2. Apply lotion, perfume and makeup BEFORE your jewelry. The oils and ingredients in your cosmetics can dull your jewelry and build up over time. Remember to put on your jewelry last.
  3. Rinse. I love wearing jewelry to the beach, but when it comes to staying golden, your jewelry doesn’t count. Even the smallest bit of salt can begin to rust any type of metal in a day or two, so remember give your jewelry a good rinse in warm, soapy water along with your bikini.
  4. Clean and polish. Sometimes, accessories are an investment and it’s important to keep them perfectly polished and clean. Use a dedicated jewelry cleaner kit every few months to keep shinin’ on!

Minimalism 101: Home, Work, School

Spring cleaning is upon us! Minimize your material things and maximize your zen space with these tips for your home, office space or school.

1. Follow the rules.
If you haven’t used/worn it in a year, it’s broken, has a hole, is stained or doesn’t fit – GET RID OF IT.

2. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Repurpose old jeans into shorts, recycle your electronics or sew a new button onto your fave sweater instead of throwing it in the trash. If we all made a little bit of effort, we can create a big change together.

3. Do good and donate. There will always be someone out there less fortunate than us, so why not organize a day with your friends to clean out your closets and make a trip to your local clothing drop off or women’s shelter.


4. Clear space, clear mind. Your desk, your bedroom or your kitchen, pick a space you spend a lot of time in and get rid of the clutter. You’ll automatically feel more zen once your surroundings are free from clutter.

5. Just let go. Stuff weighs us down both mentally and physically. Just like a detox for your body, we should regularly cleanse our lives of the material things we bring into it and be mindful of the impact we have on Mother Earth.

The Art of Slowing Down

Instant messages, instant coffee and Instagram. We live in such a fast-paced world that slowing down seems like the last thing on our minds. So here is your official reminder: Slow down! Here are a 6 ways we can all take a break to cherish every single minute and enjoy life:

1. Do less. Funny how although technology is supposed to save us time, it’s actually made us work longer and harder hours. Instead of trying to get everything done at once, prioritize what’s really important, take breaks and let go of the rest.

2. Be present. Thinking about the past and worrying about the future can fog your mind and before you know it, you’re asking yourself, “Where did the time go?”. It takes some practice, but bring yourself into the present moment and be aware of your mind, your body and your surroundings.

3. Disconnect. Leave your phone in the car, at home or better yet schedule a day of the week where you turn it off for the entire day. You’ll start to realize that those few minutes you spend checking e-mails, messages and social media add up to time you should be spending talking with friends, calling your mom or meditating.

4. Focus on people. To give someone your full, undivided attention is the greatest gift you can give. We can be so easily immersed into our own thoughts, technology and the outside world, that we must make an effort to shut out all of those distractions. Listen and connect with people rather than just being in the same room with them.


5. Appreciate nature. Go outside. Run around barefoot in the sand. Take a hike on a local trail or better yet, book a vacation and go on an adventure. Whenever and however you can, always make time to breathe fresh air and revel in Mother Nature’s beauty.

6. Find pleasure in anything. Similar to being present, this takes it a step further. Whatever you’re doing, find the enjoyable aspects of it. Get out of bed and feel the wonderful stretch as you lift your arms above your head. Sip your coffee and really take in the warm aroma. When you learn how to find happiness in the simplest of things, you begin to realize how much there is to be grateful for.

No matter what day of the week it is, we’re always dreaming of the weekend. Can’t figure out what to do? Save some cash and invest a little time and creativity into these 7 ways to have a great time without spending a dime:

1. Plan Your Dream Trip Online
Any true wanderluster has an on-going list of ‘Places To Go’. Get cozy with your laptop and a giant cup of coffee then pick out hotels, ideal flight times and sights you can’t miss. Your research will come in handy when that magical day comes to make your dream trip become a reality.

2. Write Out Your Bucketlist
We only get one life to do everything we could ever dream of and it’s never too late to start making those dreams come true. The sky’s the limit when it comes to your bucketlist so think BIG. Then post it up somewhere you can look at it every day to keep you focused on the big picture.

3. Have a Photoshoot
Try out new make-up techniques, hair styles and cute outfits with your BFF, then grab your camera and have a photoshoot! Don’t forget to accessorize with Pura Vida Bracelets 🙂 Share the pics or keep them as a reminder of how fun it is to play dress up.

Coconut Chai Latte Recipe

A little spice is always nice. Add in some creamy coconut milk and you’ve got a recipe for a great morning! Sip on a Coconut Chai Latte using our homemade chai concentrate and bring some warm sunshine to the start of your day.

Ingredients:
10 Cardamom Pods, crushed
4 Cinnamon Sticks
8 Cloves
1 piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
2.5 C Water
1 Vanilla Bean, cut down center

2 Star Anise
1/2 tsp Allspice
1/4 tsp Nutmeg
5 Black Tea Bags
Small Saucepan
Strainer
Resealable Glass Jar
Coconut Milk

Directions
1) Put everything but the black tea bags into the saucepan over medium-high heat. Once it starts boiling, reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

2) Shut off the heat after 15 minutes and add tea bags to the pot. Steep for 5 minutes.

3) Strain mixture into a glass jar and allow to cool completely. Cover and refrigerate.

4) To make a Coconut Chai Latte, mix equal amounts concentrate with coconut milk and heat through. You can also add ice for a cool treat!

Festival Fashion: Colors & Patterns – How to Mix, Match and Own It

The days are getting longer, the temps are rising and there’s a sweet smell of freshness in the air. This could only mean one thing: Festival season has arrived! Mixing and matching your colors and patterns can be tough when it comes to your festival outfit, so here are our top tips for all you free-spirited boho chic desert gypsy wanderers:

1. Dare to be different. All eyes will be on you when you embrace your uniqueness. Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries of mixing color, shape and pattern. Start with one main statement piece and then experiment with adding smaller items and accessories that compliment it.

2. Opposites attract. Mix bold prints with pretty florals or basic black with a neon-bright statement necklace. The beauty of dressing up for a festival is that anything goes, so have fun with it and wear it with confidence.

3. Experiment with color. Stay within the same color family (like lilac, pinks and purples) or coordinate with complimentary colours (blue/orange, red/green, purple/yellow). This is your chance to really stand out and be fearless with your hues. If all else fails, black never goes out of fashion (just be mindful if you’re going to be in the sun all day).

4. Keep it simple. If layering prints and patterns isn’t your thing, take the refined and classic route with a pair of distressed denim shorts, some worn-in Converse, a muscle tank and really play it up with some great accessories like Pura Vida Bracelets!

At the end of the day, it’s all about expressing yourself through what you wear and being comfortable and confident in your own skin.
