10 Reasons to Smile on a Bad Day

June 3, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Life can throw you some unexpected curve balls and it can feel like the entire world is against you. But through all that rain, there is sunshine…you just have to know where to look! Here are 10 Reasons to Smile on a Bad Day:

1) You’re alive today. Take a deep breathe and be thankful for that.

2) Going outside, laying in the grass barefoot and feeling the sunshine hit your face.

3) Pizza.

4) Turning up the volume on your fave song and dancing around your bedroom by yourself. 840 million people probably did the same to this song.

5) The beach.

6) Your smile can brighten anyone’s day, even your own.

7) If you’re having a bad day, try and make someone have a good day. You’ll both win in the end.

8) Puppies and kittens being friends.

9) Sleeping in and letting your bad day turn into a lazy day. This is totally acceptable! Always take time for yourself. And Netflix.

10) You are only one person, you’re imperfections are what make you perfect and life will take its course however it chooses to. Don’t let a bad day turn into a bad week, bad month or bad life! Just try and smile through it all because you are strong.

What Does it Mean to Live Free?

June 1, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

If you’re reading this right now, take a moment to be aware of your surroundings, your feelings and your physical body. Are you happy with it all? If you are, that’s truly wonderful. And if you aren’t, well today is the day you start living free.

So what does ‘living free’ mean exactly?

First of all, don’t get stuck in the rat race. Yes, pursue your education, nurture your mind and work hard. But I challenge you to work hard for something you’re passionate about. Whether that be stocking groceries or becoming a high-powered attorney, do it with love in your heart.

It’s not always about how much money you make, how much more successful you are than your peers or the company car you get to drive — it’s about creating change by doing something you love and never actually “working” a day in your life.

Most importantly, see the world. Nothing is more freeing than setting sail on your own adventure. It doesn’t have to be an epic journey across the world, but make time to go outside and actually see the world.

Appreciate the grass in your backyard, the sun hiding behind the clouds and fresh air. Or take it a step further and live abroad! Do whatever your heart desires and take the time to figure out exactly what that is.

We are not trees whose roots get planted in the ground and are expected to stay there until it dies. We have legs to move. We have hearts to follow. And dreams to make come true. So, how are you living free?

5 Life Lessons from Classic Children’s Books

May 19, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Before College textbooks sucked the fun out of reading for pleasure, we grew up indulging our childhood imaginations in our most cherished storybooks. Here are 5 Life Lessons from Classic Children’s Books you might have overlooked:

1) “Why did you do all this for me?’ he asked. ‘I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.’ ‘You have been my friend,’ replied Charlotte. ‘That in itself is a tremendous thing.” – Charlotte’s Web, E. B. White

Lesson: There is nothing more valuable in this world than true friendship.

2) “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” – Happy Birthday to You, Dr. Seuss

Lesson: Be proud of and love who you are. Don’t try to be anyone else but yourself.

3) “Always remember, you are braver than you believe, strong than you seem, and smarter than you think.” – Winnie the Pooh, A. A. Milne

Lesson: You can achieve anything. The first step is to believe in yourself and the rest will follow.

4) “Then from far away across the world he smelled good things to eat, so he gave up being king of the wild things.” – Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak

Lesson: Wild adventures are fun, but there’s no place like home.

5) “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be.” Love You Forever, Robert Munsch

Lesson: No matter your age, we should be grateful for the unconditional love from the special people in our lives.

May 15, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Sure it’s always good to catch up with friends and family, but when’s the last time you checked in with yourself? It’s time to have a conversation with yourself to see how YOU are doing by asking these 10 questions:

1) How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?
2) If you had the opportunity to get a message across to a large group of people, what would your message be?
3) If not now, then when?
4) Have you done anything lately worth remembering?
5) Who do you love? What are you doing about it?
6) Do you celebrate the things you do have?
7) When was the last time you tried something new?
8) What is the difference between living and existing?
9) Time or Money?
10) If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?

8 Reasons Why Being 20-Something is Awesome

February 22, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Our 20s can either be some of the greatest or toughest times in our lives, so here are some reminders why living through this decade is the best.

1. We have our own style.

Over the years, we’ve fine-tuned our personal style and can distinguish between what looks good on us and what just looks plain whack.

2. We know who we are.
We have our own opinions and aren’t afraid to voice them. We no longer have to try and fit in like a chameleon, but instead are confident in our own skin and strive to be different and unique.

3. We can spend money on fun things.
We now earn some decent coin and can spend it at our heart’s content. Spa treatments, ridiculously priced clothes, personal training, international vacations, the list of luxury never ends.

4. We have drafted an all-star lineup of friends.
The friends we have today will probably be the ones we have for the rest of our lives. We recognize what a meaningful relationship is and cherish the ones around us way more than we used to.

5. We are educated, beautiful and street smart.
We’re eloquent, business-savvy, critically aware of news, politics and pop culture. Not to mention that we are still in the prime of our youth. Move over Beyoncé!

6. We take care of our bodies and it shows.
We go to the gym, drink green smoothies, stopped eating McDonald’s every day and now treat our bodies as sacred temples. Living a long, happy life is our priority and we realize the importance of health at a young age.

7. We have direction, but there is still opportunity to grow.
We’re up for that awesome promotion and are able to finally advance our careers. Re-locate to Europe? No problem. Quit the office job and become a helicopter pilot? Do it.

8. This is the start of our real life.
This is our chance to sit down and really think about our career, where we want to create a life and what kind of person we want to be. The beauty of it all is that we have complete control over what happens.

So dream big, live free, have fun, do what makes you happy and pursue your passion because at the end of the day only you can decide your future. Share this post if you agree!

The Takeaway: What We Can Learn from the Beach

February 20, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

The beach is my place of solace. It’s always there, welcoming me with open arms, ready to kiss me with the sun and float my worries away. There is so much we can learn from Mother Nature and a sandy shore is my perfect idea of school.

Play in the sand.
Have fun. Be silly. Get dirty. Run around. Build sand castles and dream out loud. We all work so hard at working, but how hard do we work at playing?

Cherish every sunset.
Be present. Let go of the past and stop worrying about the future. Be thankful you’re alive. Watch the sunset and hold onto every minute. It doesn’t matter what happened or what will happen. All that matters is what’s happening right now.

When life gives you waves learn how to surf.
The seas get rough and waves come rolling in, which can completely turn our lives upside down. The only thing we can do is gather strength, stand tall and confidently ride it out until we conquer those waves. Everything always works out and all we can do is go with the flow and make the best of it.

The only thing certain in life is the rise and fall of the sun.
Change is constant. We’re thrown curveballs unexpectedly and things are unpredictable. But what we can trust is that a new day is always on the horizon and with every sunrise there’s hope for greatness.

What does Pura Vida Mean?

September 22, 2014 — by Griffin Thall

A phrase that you will hear and see everywhere in Costa Rica is “Pura Vida”. The term “Pura Vida” has been present in Costa Rica’s vocabulary for over 50 years. It’s English translation means “pure life”  or “simple life”, however its more then just a phrase- it is a way of life.
Where did this phrase originally come from? People believe that the term “Pura Vida” came around in 1956 after a Mexican movie entitled “Pura Vida!” was released. In the movie, the main character uses the phrase throughout the movie to stay optimistic, happy, and full of life, despite all the negative circumstances around him. Thanks to this movie, the phrase “Pura Vida” is the unofficial motto to one of the happiest countries on Earth.
Pura Vida is so much more then just a phrase, it is their culture and way of life. Costa Ricans (Ticos) use this term to say hello, goodbye, or even to let people know everything’s good! Costa Ricans don’t just let the term bring them a good life, it’s the way they use it in their everyday attitude to make them happy. “Pura Vida” means that people need to be grateful for the things they do have in life, instead of dwelling on the negative things that they don’t. The phrase shows that no matter how bad you may think you have it, life for someone else can be far more less fortunate then your own. Life is too short to be worried and upset, everyone needed to make the most of life! All in all, the locals strive to live a stress free, laid-back life and they believe that their motto “Pura Vida” perfectly exemplifies how the locals live. Costa Ricans feel that if more “foreigners” grasped this concept, the world would be a lot happier.
“Pura Vida” is the back bone to this company. We believe in a pure and happy life, and that our company and products can bring that to many people around the world. Our products can make a big impact in customers lives, whether its helping their favorite charity, or creating their own bracelet and being a voice behind our brand. Pura Vida can help you find your pure life. ¡Pura Vida!

Find Your Pura Vida: Costa Rica

August 6, 2014 — by Griffin Thall

Expedia Viewfinder partnered with Pura Vida Bracelets to urge travelers to find their own versions of pure life in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica epitomizes the pura vida spirit with an ever-present sense of living life to the fullest.  From the enchanting scenery to the endless opportunities for adventure, there’s a little reminder around every corner encouraging everyone to slow down and revel in the moment.

Expedia Viewfinder and Pura Vida Bracelets partnered to showcase opportunities for finding fulfillment and gratification in Costa Rica.  After all, it was in this laidback destination where Pura Vida Bracelets cofounders, Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman, traveled post-graduation and found inspiration from the lifestyle to build their business around.  For globetrotters exploring Central America, slow down, appreciate, and discover pura vida spirt in these Costa Rican hot spots.

Soda La Naranja
This coastal country has a diverse and cultured food scene serving up everything from Mexican to Thai.  For those in the mood for experiencing the local grub though, head to Soda La Naranja in Montezuma for some authentic Costa Rican fare.  Nosh on gallo pinto and casados, and don’t miss out on the fresh juice selection.

Witch’s Rock

According to Thall, “Go out and surf,” is one of the best pieces of advice he ever received from a local.  Do as the locals do and shred the waves at Witch’s Rock in the Santa Rosa National Park.  Popularized in the cult classic, “Endless Summer II,” this favorite surf spot features a clean, sand- bottom beach break ideal for novices and experts alike.

Manuel Antonio National Park

What Manuel Antonio National Park lacks in size, it more than makes up for in diverse flora and fauna.  This national park is one of the smallest in Costa Rica, but it is home to 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds.  It also boasts beaches, forests, mangrove swamps, and even lagoons.  Hit the trails and look out for sloths and iguanas, or take flight through the rainforest on a canopy zip line.  To further experience this oasis up close and personal, check out the kayaking, horseback riding, four-wheel driving, and parasailing options.

Catarata del Toro Waterfall

IMAGE: Flickr/Creative Commons/Steve Jurvetson/Via/

Nothing says “pura vida” like marveling at the Catarata del Toro Waterfall.  In fact, Thall says venturing to a waterfall is a 100% must-do activity during Costa Rican travels.  The Catarata del Toro Waterfall is one of the country’s best- kept secrets as the ancient volcanic crater features cascading water, fluttering hummingbirds, and captivating views.  Though it’s a hike to climb down the steps to the falls, the unspoiled serenity is well worth the workout.

Graffiti Restro Café and Wine Bar

It’s rare to find a restaurant both locals and tourists can agree on, but Graffiti just may be the exception.  Everyone seems to rave about the “ghetto gourmet” surf-and-turf cuisine at this boutique bistro in Jaco Beach, which is one of Thall’s favorite towns in Costa Rica.  Dedicated to the Slow Food Movement, the eclectic restro café takes an innovative approach to its one-of-a-kind gastronomy.  Kick back and toast travel adventures with a signature Graffiti aloe tini and a brag-worthy order of coffee-and-cacao- crusted beef tenderloin.
