Beach Yoga Flow

January 30, 2017 — by Chelsey Bishoff

Relax and free your mind. Getting started with a new year and new priorities can be a lot to load on your plate and can take a toll on your body and mind. It’s important to set goals, but dont forget to take care of yourself along the way. Did you know most of the stress we endure is brought on by ourselves? We decided to un-fog our mind and let free for a bit during an evening beach yoga session.

At the end of the day, go over what you are grateful for. Make a mental list of all the good thats to come your way and how you will achieve just that. Taking time for yourself is so important, yet we often forget to take a minute and just breathe. We encourage you to get moving this week and stay active, or just take a moment to enjoy the life all around you. Namaste.

6 Yoga Poses to De-Stress

November 18, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

The holiday season is coming up and during this time, it can get pretty hectic with balancing work, exams, school, family, friends and also finding time for yourself. Here are 6 yoga poses you can practice whenever you can spare a few minutes that will automatically lower your stress levels:

1) Child’s Pose

The calming child’s pose is a resting posture that can help quiet the mind, easing stress and anxiety while gently stretching the back.

2) Seated Forward Bend

This pose provides a complete stretch of the entire backside of the body from the back of the head through the heels. Slowly breathe into the pose and lower towards your knees. If your nose can touch your legs great! If not, even better!

3) Eagle Pose

The active and empowering eagle pose can help ward off stress by improving concentration and balance and also by opening up the shoulders, upper back and hips.

4) Corpse Pose

Most yoga practices end with several minutes spent in savasana, and it can easily be the most calming part of the whole thing. The pose puts the body completely at ease and emphasizes total relaxation. Savasana can trigger the body’s “relaxation response,” a state of deep rest that slows the breathing and lowers the blood pressure while quieting the nervous system.

5) Cat Pose

The cat pose soothes and stretches the lower back, relieving stress while gently massaging the spine. Try arching and rounding the back 10 times in a row while focusing on deep inhaling and exhaling.

6) Downward Dog

This popular pose is common for a reason: it stretches your entire body from your neck to your toes. Also, being inverted has great benefits. Any pose where the heart is above the head is a good one for the circulatory system because it encourages blood flow throughout the body. An active circulatory system helps flush toxins from our body, keep our immune system in tip-top shape, and helps regulate blood pressure.

4 Yoga Mantras to Improve Your Life

May 4, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Sometimes our lives can get a bit hectic and it’s hard to find time to slow down. This is where a mantra can really help you focus and make the most of your down time. Mantras are chants in Sanskrit used in yoga to keep our concentration focused inwardly and quiet the distractions of the outside world. Try to take a few minutes every day to repeat these mantras quietly to yourself and help anchor your wandering mind to find some inner peace:

1) OM
The sound of the universe. It’s the first, original vibration, representing the birth, death and re-birth process. OM is a great way to begin and end a yoga or mediation practice, and also comes in handy when you just need to chill out.

2) Om Namah Shivaya
This is a great mantra to help build self-confidence, reminding us that we are all made up of divine energy and should treat ourselves accordingly.

3) Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu
This mantra is a powerful way to dedicate yourself to living a life of non-harming and being of service to the greater good. This mantra encourages cooperation, compassion and living in harmony with the environment, animals and our fellow human beings.

4) Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
The peace mantra is focused on providing peace of mind, stress relief and increasing harmony in your surroundings.

5 Best Yoga Poses in the Morning

February 16, 2015 — by Griffin Thall

Inhale happiness and exhale greatness. Wake up on the bright side every morning with these 5 yoga poses meant to clear your mind, open your heart and set yourself up for a wonderful day.

1) Forward Fold
You’re most likely going to be sitting for the majority of the day so stretch it out now. Slowly bend forward as you exhale towards the ground. Bend your knees if that helps you reach lower. Don’t strain yourself or do anything that feels uncomfortable. This should feel relaxing and natural. Take 5-10 deep breathes. Gradually start to come back to standing by curling up, one vertebrate at a time.

2) Downward Dog
Lengthen and loosen all those important muscles that work to keep your body upright all day. Lay down on your stomach, tuck you toes under and plant each hand directly under your shoulders. Push off your hands and lift your tailbone towards the ceiling. Breathe is very important here. With each exhale, sit deeper into the stretch and relax everything from your head to your toes.

3) Tree Pose
This pose is my favourite because you get to really open up your chest and feel like Rocky Balboa. Stand with feet hip width apart and shift your weight onto one foot. Bring the other foot to the inside of your leg and rest it anywhere from your ankle to your inner thigh (depending on your flexibility). Don’t forget to keep your hips facing forward. If you’re feeling really awesome, reach both arms to the sky in a “Y” shape. Stand tall and feel rooted into the ground, just like a tree.

4) Seated Twist
This position stretches your upper body and awakens your tummy to get it ready for a healthy, nourishing breakfast. In a seated position, cross one leg over the other over with a bent knees. Straighten your back. Then take the arm opposite of your crossed leg and touch the inside of your elbow to the outside of your knee. Really breathe into this stretch as you begin to twist further and deeper into the stretch.

5) Hands to Heart Center
Probably the most important and effective pose of this series, this is the best time to set your intentions for the day. In a seated position with your legs crossed, sit up straight and bring both hands into prayer position right in front of your heart. Close your eyes and really focus on the inhale and exhale of your breathe as you tell yourself how great your day is going to be. Don’t forget to smile! Sit in this position for as long as you need.

5 Benefits of Yoga – Inspired by the Wanderlust Festival

March 5, 2014 — by Griffin Thall

We all want to be happier and healthier versions of ourselves. And yoga is a practice that, if you really get into it, can truly benefit your general wellness and overall being. Because we were just at the Wanderlust Festival in O’ahu this past weekend, we thought we’d give you a short list on some of the benefits that yoga provides and how easy it is to get started.

  1. According to a study from Boston University School of Medicine, practicing yoga makes you happier. Doing an hour of asanas – a sequence of standing, sitting and balancing, yogis raise their levels of GABA by 27 percent, a brain chemical that, when found in lower levels, can cause depression.
  1. Practicing yoga helps to get rid of annoying body aches. People who practiced yoga twice a week, for 90 minutes, eased their soreness by more than half. Posing improves posture and strengthens back muscles to keep aches at bay, so if you do have an achy body part, why not give yoga a shot?
  1. Practicing yoga at least three times a week at any time can help you sleep better and longer. And, insomniacs fell asleep 15 minutes faster and slept an hour more each night after doing two months of a 45-minute yoga series daily before bed.
  1. Yoga tones your entire body. It is basically strength training. According to Loren Bassett, an instructor at Pure Yoga in New York city, “You’re using your body weight to move from posture to posture, and in certain poses, you’re lifting every pound of it.”
  1. Practicing Yoga takes away your stress. According to a study in Psychosomatic Medicine, women who went to the mat at least once a week for two years or more released 41 percent less of a tension triggered protein that can make you feel tired and moody compared with newer yogis.

So basically, if you aren’t already convinced, try yoga. There are so many different types, and a lot of yoga studios offer free weeklong deals to those who are interested in trying out something new. If you want to check out some deals, try CorePower Yoga.

The Wanderlust Festival in O’ahu!

February 28, 2014 — by Griffin Thall

Pura Vida is in Hawaii this week and we couldn’t be more excited! Here to celebrate the Wanderlust Festival in O’ahu, we wanted to give you a taste of what we will be experiencing. To begin, here is a simple definition of the word, so you are not already completely lost:

Wanderlust: a strong desire to travel. And the Wanderlust Festival is a one-of-a-kind weekend long experience bringing together the world’s leading yoga teachers, top musical acts and DJs, renowned speakers and top chefs and winemakers, all in a setting of breathtaking, natural beauty. Below is a short list detailing some of the components to one of these festivals, and maybe, if it sounds like something you would be interested in, you can go to an upcoming festival. A complete schedule of the festivals can be found here.

The Wanderlust Festival Experience:

  1. Yoga: It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced yogi or a beginner just wanting trying something new, the Wanderlust festival has a program that caters to every individual. So lift to the top of the mountain and sit among the clouds, or join an intimate, smaller class based in a studio. The main goal is to get you to benefit from an experience that you may not be used to, surrounded by a community of people all with the same goals in mind.
  1. Music: A wide array of music is also performed at these festivals. Ranging from intimate pop-up shows to main stage events, the eclectic array will feed into your experience and enhance your overall journey. Some of the bands going to be featured at the O’ahu Wanderlust festival include DJ Drez, Kevin Paris and Donavon Frankenreiter.
  1. Outdoor Adventures: One of the great things about these festivals is that they encourage you to get off the mat and out into the surrounding natural setting. Some of the cool outdoor adventures featured at the O’ahu Wanderlust Festival include eco-kayaking through the Kawela Bay, horseback riding, a helicopter tour of O’ahu and an off-road segway tour.
  1. Food, Wine and Local Craft: Grass-fed, cold-pressed, small-batch, gluten-free, certified-organic – this is the kind of food you are going to get when attending this festival. The whole experience is about cleansing your palette, so what better way than from the inside out?
  1. Speakeasy Lectures: The Speakeasy lecture is unique to the Wanderlust Festival in that subjects who speak always speak about topics that pertain to mindful living. It is a casual experience, where the speakers can literally speak-easily, and it is one of the main draws to attending these festivals.

Find more information about the Wanderlust Festivals here, and hopefully everyone has a happy weekend!
